from my undestanding of russia is Russia didn't exist till 1992 as before that it was USSR so the question is if someone left USSR let say in 1980 and they used live in what is now Ukraine are they Russian(USSR) or are they Ukrainean as that is the country that used to live in called?

Russia has existed long before 1992 (I mean medieval times). It's just that during a large part of the 20th century is was part of the USSR along with other countries. Sorry but had to that clear up.

About the question of which country you are from during the existence of USSR - perhaps it's worth specifying if you are a tadjik or an uzbek, but I don't think anyone would specify Ukraine or Belarus since they're pretty much the same people as russians.

My other half is Ukranian. I'm signed up to take Russian 1 in Sept. I suck horribly at learning languages....

Same here, she's from Kieve. No language classes for me though; she's teaching me herself.
