Anyone here running a Linux Cluster

Beowulf or other? I'm looking for info on setting up a 2 or 3 system cluster at home. Which would be used down the road for making a pitch (to management) at work.

I'm in the process of setting up a 24 node Beowulf cluster at work right now. Just waiting for the electricians to finish adding in new outlets/breakers.

Some good places to start:

http://www.beowulf-underground.org/
http://oscar.sourceforge.net/

http://dmoz.org/Computers/Parallel_Computing/Beowulf/
http://www.cbel.com/Beowulf_Parallel_Computing/?order=alpha

There are also a bunch of downloads I acquired over the course of researching clusters available at
http://solarmuri.ssl.berkeley.edu/~bercik/public/manuscripts/beowulf/. There is no rhyme or reason in there though---enter at your own risk! 😉

We're currently replacing an alpha cluster with a 20 node dual Xeon cluster @ work. I also have access to a large BSD based cluster (about 140 dual CPU nodes). I've also run a small cluster @ home, but not currently.
What do you want to know?

MereMortal: So how much power did the electricians install? What are you doing for cooling? What kinda hardware you running?

When we decided to get the cluster the lab decided to make a new server room, so that is why we had to wait. We needed 5-20 A circuits, but had 10 installed for expansion. The room has its own large AC unit, but with the other servers in there, we are close to maxed out temperature-wise. It's interesting to look at plots of node temps---they are cyclic with peak temps at 2 PM.

As for the hardware, I'm lazy, so I'll just point you to a thread where I listed the specs. It's not a big cluster, but it's purpose is to develop code to run on larger systems (it really sucks trying to develop code on national supercomputer systems, where your job sits in a queue for a week+ and then dies 5 minutes after it finally starts running). On the plus side, we're ordering another 2 TB file server. 😀
