Anyone here returned a dead IBM Deskstar to IBM lately? Worth it?

I too have one of these Deathstars. The 45GB version. It's about 20 months old and died on me a couple of months ago. Of course, I had to run out and buy a new drive immediately as it died on my main system.

I am debating whether or not it's worth returning to IBM to get another one. I would probably use it at some point, but if I have to pay shipping both ways and find the original paperwork, and wait quite some time for replacement, I might as well save the aggravation and go buy new, larger drive when the need arises.

What's your experience been?

I was one of the few people that still functional 75GXP's....key word is "was". I just recently sent two dead 30GIG's in and got two brand spanking new 60GXP 40GIG's as replacements last week. Took about two weeks to get my replacments. So yes, its worth it😀

Did you need to have purchaes receipts? I presume one can find the mailing return address somewhere on IBM's website? Did you have to pay return shipping?

Yeah, soon as you run the IBM fitness test on the HDD's, go to the IBM's site and request an RMA. Fill the info in and follow the directions. I only had to pay shipping to IBM, not back.

I just filled out an RMA not even 30 min ago.

You do pay shipping there. Receipts are not required. They can tell by the serial # and part # if it's still under warranty. Easy as pie. Just be sure to pack along their guidelines and you'll be all good!
