I recently just learned the rules of the game, and I decided to join my high school team for something to occupy my time. I've been trying to watch the more experienced guys on my team to see if i could pick up some technique, but im still kinda lost. Do you have any tips for a beginner?

If your a beginner, start out with a $30 or so titanium racquet. Don't put all your strength into hitting it. Avoid bending your wrist.

Grip it so that a "v" forms between your thumb and index finger.

Yeah, i played tennis through most of my adolescent. hmm as for tips on getting better... just play play play.

DrumminBoy, the best advice I can tell you is to listen to your coach and learn what he/she is teaching you, it worked for me while I played in school, hope this helps 🙂

It's all about practice and playing. If you can try to play against people who are better then you are. It might be frustrating losing all the time, but its one of the best ways to learn.

a year of personal coaching and I still couldn't serve consistantly. I had a killer serve, it just only went in 1 out of every 10 times. I had a good forehand but my backhand sucked. Good game, but it sucks playing with people that dont' knwo what they're doing, the game gets boring quick. Rally is sometimes more fun then trying to kill the other opponent.

PoPPeR, I hope you meant to say that your serve only went out 1 of 10 times, otherwise, it's just luck IMHO.

i played in high school, but that was 20 years ago, i haven't played in about 15 years
a guy at work wants me to start playing at lunch when it gets warm, i probably should , its a fun game, especially doubles

Turn your shoulders everytime you hit the ball. Swing in a half-circle motion and not horizontally because you need to "scoop" the ball over the net but becareful not to "scoop" it too high. Just practice on getting the ball over the net. Then practice on hitting it inbounds. Don't worry about hitting the ball hard yet, it's basically an accelerated swing.

That is what i hear from my instructor all the time.

I took up tennis my sophmore year in highschool. I just took it to keep in shape for wrestling.

I sucked at first. but i was lucky. my godfather was a semi-pro player and was the a college coach. so i got good pretty fast. but i still sucked heh 😱

best thing you can do is practice and play.

I used to play all the time as a kid, but then slowed down and finally stopped two years ago. Well i'm hoping to get back into it again, and i have a game tomorow. As for tips, it's usually a good idea to play with people who are better than you.

no i meant my serve only went in every one out of 10, hence me saying i had a very inconsistent serve 🙂

Girls California #1 high school player plays for my school. She was in my PE class, she was in the US Open but lost in the first round. Went to the same school as Kournikova (doesn't say anything considering kournikova blows, but it was the same russian training school). Funny, being the #1 California girls tennis player and no one even cares at our school. Highly recruited basketball prospect (ie lebron)... would be a crazy media frenzy.

i've played tennis 3 times in my life.

2 of those times i broke my right foot.

i no longer play tennis.
