I absolutely love this game, used to play it all the time with my father growing up. I'm a mental health counselor at a residence now, and one of our residents is very sharp. He loves the game too so I try to play him at least once per day.

Damn 8s!

the guy I play here loves setting intricate traps with bombs, his spy, and other pieces. It's literally like playing a game of chess.

This one trap he set here:

X's are bombs, 1 is his 1, F is his flag (which was on the back row)

_X
X1X
XFX

So basically I hit a couple bombs in the area and figure 'OK this is where his flag is". I take out the bomb at the tip of the thing, and figure I have the game won. Next turn I attack with the same 8...and he says "1". I flipped. Great trap. he went on a rampage with the 1 after that.

I love that game, still have the copy of it I picked up back in '83 after seeing it at someone else's house for the first time. :)

I wonder if that online version is any good...we could get a tourny going on ATOT.

I thought chess was the chess of board games.
Chess is the Monopoly of board games.

Monopoly is the Manos: The Hands of Fate of board games. It's terrible, and it's longer than it needs to be because of people randomly making out.

I'm not a big fan of Stratego, though I did like it when I was younger. If you like strategic board games though, you should check out http://www.boardgamegeek.com for other games you might be interested in.

I love all kinds of board games. Last night I played Settlers of Catan, Pandemic and Acquire until about 2 am. But yes, I love stratego and the 4 player variant is hysterical as well.

Get the "Cities and Knights" version of Catan for some real fun.

Acquire is a great game! I picked up a copy on close-out at Barnes & Noble for under ten dollars, though it is the newer version with all cardboard tokens. I learned to play on the original with the plastic pieces. So sad that Hasbro is going to stop production on a lot of those classic board games they acquired with their takeover of other companies. :(

The main point of chess is that it's a game of perfect information, which is not the case with Stratego. So Stratego can't be the chess of anything. (This is ignoring the fact that chess is the chess of board games.)

In other news, Cities and Knights of Catan does indeed rock.

I would love picking up my mines, look like I'm going to move them forward, then put them back down. The opponent then senses weakness in that piece and rushes to their destruction

ROFL.

I had a similar move. I would pick up my mines, move them once. Then move all kinds of other pieces around them. My mine would eventually be attacked by a 5 and meet its maker. Rage and yelling would ensue, with me denying ever having moved my mine, simply explaining "you must have got confused".
