I've never had a scooter before, but I was thinking it might be a fun little toy to drive around Chicago with. Is it like riding a 10-speed? Can you fit two people on them safely? I'm basically clueless, so if anyone has some insight, please share :D

1) You can probably find a competent used one for around $1000-1500
2) No, they are nothing like a 10-speed. Scooter's don't have manual tranny's, you don't pedal them, and they go much faster than a bike (40-50mph).
3) Yes, you can fit 2 people on any decent sized scooters.
4) They get excellent gas mileage, and can be fun to drive.
5) Don't let any friends see you driving it.

A 10-speed?
Are you talking about a motor scooter?
You can get new ones for a couple grand, and decent used ones for under $1000

They are also pretty mechanically simple, so if you're a bit of a gearhead, you could get a busted one for a couple hundred and fix it up.
