I am looking to get my wife a new camera. She wants something that can get some decent shots of the kids indoors as well as being able to take out and about for vacation photos and such. I have given up on her ever wanting to use my DSLR, and I guess I can't blame her as I rarely seem to want to lug all of that stuff around anymore myself.

Anyhow, because a lot of the usage will be indoors it seems like going with something with a little less zoom but a faster lens is the way to go. Right now the Lumix LX7 and the Canon S110 seem to offer the best performance without breaking the bank (Sony). I was quite interested in the Canon SX280 but I have a feeling it is a bit slow for indoor use.

Does anyone here have experience with these cameras and have an opinion on their use as a general P&S?

Hey, are you me, posting as an alter-ego? I got my wife the S110 under exactly the same circumstances!

I can't give too much experience in a month's use, but I'm beginning to think the S110 is all it's hyped up to be. Indoor shots without flash are great, and the flash is powerful too. And to keep up with the times, it has a touch-screen LCD : you can tap to re-focus away from the default picked automatically, to review all shots, and even to take a shot! I had thought it a gimmick, but I see my wife and kids use it very naturally; of course, they think it funny that my DSLR does not have a touch screen !

The only problem with it, is that the flash is a pop-up, on the left of the camera. I read about it, heard others complain, and thought I'd not be bothered with it. But I am : if you use the camera constantly, you'll get used to gripping it from the right side, or the lower left corner, but when I hand it over to others and see the flash struggle to come up against their fingers, I personally worry it will fail one day. But I see this quirk with a lot of the newer compacts, so maybe it's just me.

Thanks for the input radhak. I have a feeling I will give the S110 a try. The only thing holding me back is that it seems this camera has the same lens error issue that previous models had.

Some of these newer cameras have me thinking about selling my SLR stuff and simplifying. A decent P&S plus perhaps a superzoom sure would make life easier.

One area P&S and mirrorless could not catch up with dSLR yet is focus speed. It may not be often that you need really quick focus, but when you need it you'll miss it.

I OWN A LX7!!!

As of one hour ago.
And its freakin sweet. Fast focus, excellent exposures in auto and manual modes. Loads of options, huge apeture, and its also got tons of good reviews if you dont trust me.

Highly recommended.

Does it fit easily in a pocket? It looks a little bit chubby.

Thankfully we have not seen any errors yet; I thought statistically the error on the S110 was significantly reduced...or is that my wishful thinking?

Uh oh - I on the other hand am getting more attached to my DSLR! The S110 is so far ahead of the earlier P&S I've handled in terms of features, performance and design that my mind is blown - and it gives gorgeous shots in many places I would not even bothered earlier with lesser compacts. BUT, the places it fails, is what marks the difference between DSLRs and the rest. Quick focus, large sensor, ultimate control - P&S have made progress, but not to the extent of challenging DSLRs.

I'm not honestly sure. Just scanning the online reviews it seems that the problem is still there, but Canon will still replace your camera if it happens.

I hear you. I prefer using my DSLR as well, I just find myself not lugging it around that much anymore. I need to start working on that.

It's a little bulky for a pocket, but then again its photographic capabilities are greater than just about any truly pocketable camera. It will fit in cargo short pockets or jacket pockets, in any case.

After much debate, I went with the S110. If I were buying a "pocket" camera for me, I would have went with the LX7. As it is I feel like the S110 will work a little better for my wife with the touch screen focus and wi-fi.
