Anyone here own a Hyundai Elantra Touring?

Wife and I plan to check one out this weekend, curious as to your thoughts on the model.

My roommate (Hyundai engineer) had one as a company car a few weeks ago. I honestly liked it a lot, felt nice and roomy, decent interior, tons of room in the back, ride was pretty good. I wouldn't buy one but if you need a wagon of sorts its a pretty good option.

Not in the market for a wagon, but we did go look at the Elantra the other night. Didn't test drive, but I had my wife sit in that and the Sonata, just to see what she liked.

Goddam PT Cruiser might need a couple grand in tranny work, and I'm considering fixing it on the cheap and ditching it. The Elantra seems like a nice little commuter. Small and gets good mileage, but for the money it seems a little higher quality than similar models from other makes.

So we got to test drive one today and were impressed. Very nice fit and finish, smooth/quiet ride, comfortable, nice features, solid feel, nice warranty (5yr/60k) and a good negotiated price ($16.8k).

The only thing we were a little disappointed by was the gas mileage seems a little low for a fairly modest 4 banger (30mpg highway w/ 141 hp). With 3 adults in the car, it was a bit sluggish out of a traffic light, but not unexpected.

It's alright. not as refined as the competition though. Just an FYI, you can get a Corolla for that price now. It's an overall better car.

It's a very decent car. I test drove one awhile back and liked it, but wished it had a 6spd manual.
Its competition would likely be the Mazda3 hatch, Toyota Matrix, VW Golf/Rabbit, Suzuki SX4 and Subaru Impreza hatch. None of those, similarly spec'ed, are particularly great fuel sippers.

You may want to wait out for the Ford Festiva. 6spd dual clutch gearbox with 30mpg city 38hwy.

Should be stateside in a few months as a 2011 model.

I'd also look at the Nissan Versa & Kia Soul. I'm sue a Forte hatch is in the works but no release date is close. Prolly 2012.

Actually I didn't like the Corolla all that much, and not really as much as the Hyundai. I thought the interior of the Hyundai felt upscale, the Corolla still felt on the econo end of the scale. Also, as mentioned, its not a wagon.

So did you get one?

I'm looking at getting a Touring......... but I may wait for the 2011 Sedan......... different styling.

If you bought one......... how do you like it?

Cheers,
Aquaman

IIRC he got a Jetta Sportwagen TDI instead.

I bought a regular Elantra last year during C4C and really like it. For what you get for the money and the warranty I couldn't be happier, no regrets.

The Touring is a nice car but if want a little better mpg I would suggest the Elantra SE (not the GLS) sedan.

I drove a rental Elantra sedan for 4 days last week and came away mostly impressed. The interior was well put together, and exuded quality. It handled decently, but the electric steering was awful. Let me emphasize:

TERRIBLE ELECTRIC STEERING. 😵

It felt as if the steering resistance was set to random! For example, if you're taking a curve, you'd better grip the wheel with both hands or the car will veer out of line on either side. (The only other time I experienced such bad electric steering was in an HHR.) Overall, Elantra>>Corolla.

A friend of mine got one earlier this summer. She wanted a small SUV but I suggest she take a look at the Elantra Touring and she really liked it.

Corolla isnt a wagon

Matrix?

I'm actually looking at the Elantra Touring for my mom. Her current ride is 11 years old and she put in $3k in repairs over the past year, so it is about time... She's driving an old Volvo S40 or something (rebadged Mazda Protoge?) and wants something bigger and as a wagon. Is the Elantra bigger enough to feel roomier than an 11 year old compact?

What other medium sized wagons are out there? We're also looking at the Jetta wagon and the Volvo V50 or V70 (year old car cost $10k less than new - yay for depreciation!).

Whoops, sorry to threadjack. :whiste:
