I bought a Honeywell 50250-S to run in my bedroom. As everyone says, it's loud. I run it on high when I'm not in the room, low when I'm there, and off when I'm sleeping. I haven't been sleeping well due to my air conditioner cycling, so I might try low for the white noise.

I change this filter about once every 10-12 months, and clean the outer charcoal filter 3X a year.
Which filter do you replace every 10-12 months?

Has anyone tried these DIY prefilter replacements? The 50250 one's multiple layers look much more substantial than the standard carbon prefilter.

When we moved into our new apartment after tying the knot, I couldn't stop sneezing while we were trying to unpack. Frustrated, I went out to walmart and bought one of these: http://www.walmart.com/ip/True-HEPA-...Holmes/9189152

I know it was an impulse buy, but I was desperate. It worked beautifully. The replacement hepa filters are the D-type filters and you can find those just about anywhere. It seems that amazon, target, and bestbuy all sell a similar version.

I made one for my large room by duct taping an a/c filter to the back of a box fan works fine.

Build your own. Go to the hardware store and look for the most common/cheap size furnace filter, and build it to use those. That way you are not stuck having to buy a proprietary filter that, if the company decides to discontinue, you are screwed.

That's what I plan to do when I build my server room, as I want the air in there to be super clean so the servers don't get all dusty. Probably going to put my workstation down there too and run long cables. I have to clean that box like every week because of my cat and she's short haired. Does not help that she often sleeps on top of it though. Silly cat.
