I am thinking about getting one of the new M3's with the SMG option. I was just wondering if the typicial car buying tips apply to BMW's I would guess not but just wanted to see. For example getting a BMW for around 2-5% over invoice

Thanks in advance

You're more likely to see Red Dawn being nice to people than getting a BMW @ 2-5% over invoice. They'd laugh you out of the dealership dood. It's one thing to do it on a Civic - it's another thing to do it on a $50k+ car

Consider it a good deal if you pay MSRP. Are you on the waiting list yet? I had to put a $5000 deposit down and wait 6 months for mine.

Go to Edmund's Townhall and post on the BMW 3-series board. They'll tell you everything you need to know. As for what applies and what doesn't...forget about a discount of any kind. Consider yourself lucky if you pay MSRP. There is a waiting list and you need to get on it. Ask the Edmunds board for a link to the delivery checklist, if and when you get the car use that to nitpick any little things wrong with it. It is a 50K car after all. :p You might consider a CPO M3 if you want one sooner, although I would worry about previous abuse.

As for the SMG, it's a really cool option, but make sure you think about whether or not you *really* want to give up that sweet six speed that's also offered before you pull the trigger. Maybe they'll let you test drive one with an SMG if they have one and you offer to babysit the manager's kids free for a month. :p

Knowing your 1337 skills Ross you'd probably get the M3 for @cost

I'm not so sure, an Acura yes, maybe a Lexus, but getting a good deal on a BMW? That's a tough one.

Friend of mine got an M3 convertible earlier this year. Took him a day to find one and he paid sticker for it. As for getting it 2-5% over invoice... If you manage to find a dealership willing to give you that, tell them I'll buy one, too. :)

And ain't that the truth! :Q

28K for my fully-loaded '98 3-Series convertible. Me, and the 2nd-best deal-maker west of the Mississippi (after you know who) could only knock about $1000 off the final, out-the-door price on this advertised "clearance" vehicle.

We did get free chrome tips though... :p

I figure the best advice for someone interested in getting a BMW anytime in the future is to join the BMW Car Club of America. If you're a member for one year or more, you'll get an automatic $500-1500 of a BMW. The dealers can't fudge with this figure either. You negotiate a price, send in some paperwork, and BMW will cut you the check.

Thanks for your input guys. I pretty much figured that it was going to be MSRP. As far as the waiting list, I have read several posts on a M3 forum and you can call around and find dealers that do not have a waiting list.

I know how to drive a man tranny so that isn't a worry. I am curious why you guys wouldn't go with it? The computer can shift better than I can that is for sure.

On the CPO front, I am torn, the Warrent would still apply and you can always get a longer warrenty so the abused car problem seems a little less troublesome.

Thanks

Ummm, that's not true at all. It probably isn't true for the E46 M3, but the E46 325i/Ci and the 330i/Ci can be had, in certain regions, for as little as a thousand over invoice. Look up the "Rizzo method"...

SMG isnt worth it. it shifts faster than you, but if you buy something like an M3, it's a drivers car. you get much much much more control with a stick. you feel the car, you're doing the shifts. that and i guess there have been some problems with smgII, but ive just heard about it, not really read about it :)

just out of curiousity, are you gonna get the car soon or can you wait? if you can wait and you arent dead set on the m3, you should wait for the 2003 audi s4. it's supposed to have a new 4.2L V8 340hp engine, but for now it's just speculation until they release a paper or osmething like that :) it will have quattro, the sexiest AWD out there, and they're trying to keep the weight under 3500lb. but yah, the new s4 is supposed to be the m3 killer (that is until the new m3 comes out :))

consider it a good deal if u can get msrp.... my friend got it for 10k above msrp (but that was a year ago), but now it is not too hard to get msrp, just shop around.... especially call dealers out of calif (demand for m3 is very high in CA, so those cocky dealers mark up the car), I think they will ship the car to you for free, u just need to pick it up in your local dealer

GET THE SMG!!! man that is a sswwweetttt system.... it shifts MUCH faster than manual... and it even has launch control for street races!!!

as for the CPO, you'd never know if the car was abused or not, especially for early models M3 has some issues with redlining, especially if not broken in properly

Most dealers are still getting MSRP or above on the M Series and 754i. All the rest are up for negotation.

Actually, you can get lucky on something like this, but not likely. Depends on demand in your area. The BMW dealership near me had a M3 convertible sitting on the lot. If I really wanted it, I probably could have done some negotiating on it (of course, the sticker on that one was starting at $65k). Typically, however, BMW dealerships carry very little inventory since there is no dealer holdback from BMW (this lot had 3 5 series, about 6 3 series, plus 4 cars in the showroom, in addition to the M3 convertible). You can check with your local dealership, but it will be extremely hit and miss as to whether or not they have something on the lot that they will be willing to negotiate on. If you are ordering one, the negotiations will likely be short.

I have two friend's who recently got M5's. One of my friend's was on a waiting list, but his dad has connections and he got his within a week. My other friend got a M5 by playing poker. The guy who had the M5 owed him A LOT of money, and they basically traded cars (he had a 2001 Maxima before).

He doesn't really suck ass. It just that it accumulated over 2 years, he would lose 8000 one night, win 5000 the other.. at one point he was even up a sizable amount. If you really want to join in on our poker games, just PM Me. $2000 to buy in, we usually play every monday night. (Well I don't usually play, too rich for me but once in a while I'll try to buy in at $500 if they let me.) :)

I am in no hurry, but on the new s4 I haven't read or heard of a firm release date.
