Anyone here overclocking a P4 3.4GHz Northwood?

If I had one, I'd tell ya. Still looking for one, but I would guess they would oc to 3.6-3.75 easy.

They normally overclock to about the same levels of the 3.2C. I do know 1 guy who is running 4.1 stable on air, but that is rare for a NW. For overclocking you are better off going with the 3.2 or 3.4E. The D0 steppings easily reach 4+Ghz and depending what motherboard you have you can even use the 14x multi via the CPU Free Lock.

I seen quite a few 3.8 to 3.9ghz on air....

At this level the prescotts start performing well versus its northwood predecessor....Heat and cooling should be a concern as well as power.....

I didn't see a good enough deal on the 3.4c or I would have upgraded my p4 setup with it...I think maybe a newer 3.0 or 3.2c may get you to the same 3.8-3.9ghz level and more bang for the buck....

3.75 should be achievable and that's where I run my Northwood just to keep the house circuit breaker from tripping. It would probably help if I didnt have 4 other comps on the same circuit. Hehe. Check sig.

Okay guys, I got the 3.4GHz Northwood installed and after running all the burn-in tests I've got it up and running stably at 3.876Ghz (228fsb) using a Vcore of 1.6 volts with air cooling. Heatsink is a slk900 with a 92 millimetre fan. Temperature at full load doesn't exceed 37°C
The board would post at 4.01GHz but wouldn't load windows. Windows would load @235fsb but memtest was showing massive number of errors. Reducing the fsb sorted out the errors.
This should do me for the time being until upgrade time in about six months!

I am bidding on a 3.4C on eBay, I hope its worth it for the price! I was hoping to push this to 3.9 Anyone think that is possible with a XP-120 cooler?

i lucked out and scored a brand new 3.2E retail w/DO stepping from a fellow at'r for $175.00 😉 this was to replace my 2.8C that was running at 3.5 on stock voltage with watercooling. the 3.2E did 3.9 right out of the box on stock voltage. i'm real happy with it but if you o/c these pressley's, you definitely need watercooling to run it stable. my temp's are 34C idle, 38C load, 26C ambient.

I have to wonder about the calibration of your temp monitor if you are getting 37 deg under load. Without water cooling I believe that most Northwoods that are overclocked start at idle in the mid to upper 30s. Then under full laod they move up to the high 40s and low 50s on air cooling.

I'll try to find a link.

Deskstar.

I think only Prescotts get that hot. Mine idles in the high 40's.

Edit: Ah, I see you edited your post. My post in now irrelevant.
