My uncle killed himself but that was before I was born (or maybe just after). My family doesn't like to talk about it...

Not I... Point of thread?

I was just reading about assisted suicide, hemlock society etc and thought it would be an interesting, type of discussion.

From your title, I figured you meant a suicide from extreme depression or something tied to mental illness.
Assisted suicide and the hemlock society are just people taking an out a few painful months before a grisly natural death in most cases.

No. The closest suicide here was either my mom's third cousin or her cousin's friend... can't remember which. He killed himself as a kid anyways.

no. here in Israel the suicide is condemned. it's considered bad and a person that commits suicide doesn't get buried in the official cemeteries.

although my grandfather was in depression for a long time and was proaly thinking of it but we managed to help him through it.

Those reasons can be discussed as well,I just read a stat that suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in the USA and would probably be higher on the list if cause of death were always truthfuly reported....that's pretty shocking

Jean, this is kind of a morbid subject. Did you? I personally never have. I lost a cousin to AIDS, but the fact he was gay never came out, until after his funeral.

Thoughts of mortality, especially my own, are not ones I am comfortable with. I have a lot of work to do.

A year ago my (now) ex-girlfriend was telling me about how one of her best friends had been dating a guy for five years and he gave her a promise ring. I laughed at her. They're in their late 20s and I didn't think that anyone did stuff like that after junior high and high school. My ex-girlfriend pointed out how her best friend at least had this great commitment.

At about the same time she told me about her other best friend who had moved in with this married guy. He was a lot older than her and he had a wife and two kids who he was leaving for the new girl. My ex-girlfriend pointed out how great it was that her friend had such a man who'd give up so much for her. I told her it wasn't going to happen.

A year later and the first girl gave the ring back during the fall. She's now slutting around with about six different guys at the same time. The second girl is dealing with the (still... sort of) married guy. He put her service pistol into his mouth and pulled the trigger two weeks ago. His wife blames the girl.

Welcome me to ATOT!! :)

my mother's husband killed himself last july. she and i were both in the house. she was about 20 feet away from him and i was on the stairs about 30 feet away. his son was murdered the year before, so as a result he was severely depressed and was a drunk. i understand his reason.

edit: i was 26 when it happened.

..I've known people that drank them selves to death. And it was a surprise. They weren't falling down drunks and nobody really knew they had a problem till it was too late. In all cases it was death by bottle. They knew full well the damage they were doing but did it anyway. I'll never understand.

My uncle committed suicide I think 3-4 years ago so I was in my late teens. I really don't know why he started to go down that path though. I do think it started to go down hill for him once my grandmother died. The last few times I seen him were at city festivals getting drunk off his ass. A couple of years latter one of my aunts got a call from Kansas City Police saying they found his hung body. It took them a few weeks to find out who he was as he had nothing that could ID him.

I had a first cousin commit suicide. I wasn't close to him. I've had a few other first cousins attempt suicide.
