I ran into a woman I used to go out with YEARS ago and she is thinking about moving to this area of Tennessee. I was stationed in Tennessee back in the early 70's so any info I have on the area is pretty out of date.

Anyone one have anything to say about this area of the state?

Land up in Oregon is VERY expensive, but I guess down there it's pretty cheap, hence the reason she's thinking of moving there...

I live in tennessee, but not in that region. On a completely unrelated note, thats pretty close to the Johnsonville Fossil plant, pretty cool coal plant, 10 coal units and 16 nautral gas + oil combustion turbines. Not that most people consider having a huge coal plant near their house is a good thing, but I like them :p.

When I was there it was in the Millington area. Not sure where that is in relationship to the area she's looking at though.

Without whipping out a map I want to say Paris isnt that far from me. I just moved to Dyer a little over a year ago and yes everything here is pretty cheap, bought my house very cheap, if your skilled you can make a good living down here for cost of living and what a skilled person gets paid would make a lot more here then a lot of other places. But if your not then the pay just suck, but they did just raise the min wage ;)

Homes in my area can be had for as little as $15K on up. I got mine a 3 bedroom 3 living room, 2 bath, dining room, work area, new HVAC, full basement, 2 1/2 car garage, small barn, on .6 acre land for $49.5, Total, and my taxes on all this is $635 a year. Its Gibson county which is more expensive, and im in the city which mean I pay $271 more in taxes (added into the figure I gave), so if your out of the city and different count its even cheaper. Thing here to remember is everyone is way laid back, they wave at you even if they dont know you so prepared to wave all the time driving down the road, everything is about 30-40 miles away but there is NO traffic so no sitting in rush hour in smog for a hour to go 2 miles. If you cant get to the store it can be delivered ;)

OH and if you come down here be happy to have you come over and sit a spell and bs for a bit, maybe a beer or two and throw something on the grill ;)

OH and down here it is VERY diverse. You drive down the road and you see a shack and then next door to the shack or trailer is a mansion, then a couple nice well kept homes, and then a few more shacks, and then very upscale homes, never seen nothing like it but one thing is for sure, no matter who you are or what you look like everyone around here gets along and are very friendly.

Area she is talking about is half way between Memphis and Nashville, North of I-40.

You have the University of TN at Martin not far from there. Jackson is around 40 miles south. Union City to the NW. Not far from the TN river.

Not too much in that area

Well if Jackson is 40 miles south then its not far from me at all because its 35 miles south from where im at. As for nothing at all I beg to differ. Jackson is a pretty big area and Union city isnt that bad either (though Jackson has it all).

Jackson has all your fancy stores (no CC though), fancy restaurants, go carts, putting course, pretty much what everyone has they have it. Memphis shows 2 hours according to the map but if you take the back roads can be there in about 1 hour and 15 minutes and they have everything there, bars, night life, you name it.

Since I have a good Idea now where he is saying its country living, quiet, laid back, cheap housing, take you 35-40 minutes to get to Jackson, which if your now at a spot with traffic it takes you what the same time to do 10 miles on a good day ;) and here were talking rolling hills, pastures, nice sh!t to take in on your drive so your not all wound up by the time you make it to where you need to be. I know, I moved from Hammond IN, delt with Chicago traffic for many many years, Im loving it here.

If you can deal with a slow pace, no more stress, no traffic, a beautiful FULL star lit sky on cloudless nights, quiet nights and days with no cars honking, sirens going off, people screaming and smog, then your going to just love it down here.

Now you're making ME want to move there.
I grew up in Indiana and Missouri so I'm sure Tennessee is similar. The only time I spent there was when I was going to Jet School during my stint in the Corps and that was very early 70's. My only concern personally is the redneck factor. Are people pretty excepting of others there or are they more of the "If you ain't like me, you ain't SH!t" mentality?
Although there is a certain amount of that here in Oregon, I don't think I could deal with too much of that on a daily basis.

Heck i'm asian and have lived outside Memphis all my life. I don't think i've had a problem with anyone, and i've done business with some rough looking characters. Of course there are jackasses everywhere. This is the Bible belt, so I wouldn't go around talking trash about God.

We speak/sound like nothing like the people down here and they call us on it right away with "You aint from around here, where you from?" being asked all the time. When we tell them and why we moved they ask how we like it and Im honest in my answer and that is we love it here. I grew up everywhere mainly for me Mo in the Lees Summit, Blues Springs, and Lake Lotawana area, Indiana, and Chicago, so Im not totally a Northern boy. We were welcomed in our town with open arms, Oh your the family that bought the Old Keys's place without looking at it, welcome. Our neighbors always say high, one, a farmer, has hooked us up with kick as fruit (cantaloupe) last year, sends us holiday cards, comes over and talks every now and then, our other neighbor loves our kids and really hooked them up for Halloween, our neighbor across the street has horses and has allowed them to pet them and has offered to let them ride the other horses they have at their other farm when ever they want.

I have yet to meet one person face to face that has show any kind of racial anything towards us, or anyone, and that goes for all colors down here. EVERYONE is just so damn nice and the best decision I made was packing up and leaving Indiana for down here, my stress level went down 500 fold, all I have to do is get my finances straightened out, get on SSI when I can apply for it in dec, and I will be a super happy, retired man at the age of 35.

OH and when you do move here I hope your into rc trucks because in the summertime my son and I lay out a track in the back yard and do that all day on saturday, and if not we will get you hooked into the hobby ;)

OH and that mentality you speak of I seen that more up north back in Chicago/Indiana then I have seen here. I was all set for "Your a Yankee POS go back where you come from!" but that has never been the case once, total opposite from the stereotypes given and feel bad for ever thinking the things I did prior to coming here. Their school system here in my town makes the one back up in Indiana my oldest went to look like a joke. They do not fvck around and are huge on education.

House listings for Paris TN, start in the $20K

Holy Sh1t Im gonna move! 5 bed, 2 bath, 3500 sqft, $30K DAMN!

Looking at mapquest Paris is actuall a hour away from me (more like then half hour since there are no cops around), and in the city, And DAMN what you can have for just $55K, un real and making me think a single story would be nice, sell you my house for the price of this one :)

Here is listings for McKenzie.

Huntingdon Area

And some others to consider near me are:
Milan
Humboldt
Trenton
My town Dyer I have to plug
This house is a few doors down from me and is huge on a lot of land.
Rutherford

And just so you know for gas and a lunch Id be happy to go look at any house you like and take all kinds of pics provided im not in too much pain to go do it. Be happy to help you in any way that I can if you really are looking to move this way.

But I hope this helps, of course in every town you have your good side and bad side and dont actually think the price sets them apart, that one house down the street from me is going for $110K while mine was $50K, down here old folks and kicking the bucket left and right so it really depends on whos holding the papers to the houses they left behind. I got mine off the Widow who decided to move out of state to a nursing home, according to the appraiser my house in its condition is worth $150K so I made out pretty good ;) So look at the listings, get a idea at what you want to look at, I can swing over to a few take a few hundred shots of the home and area, send them your way and then you can decide if you want to fly down here and look and I can be your limo service for the days your here :)

PM me if this is what will work for you and I will shoot you my phone number.

My sister-in-law just started school at Union University down in Jackson. I helped her move at the beginning of the year, and Jackson seemed like a very nice town. It's not as detailed as funboy's description, but you can't go wrong with most of Tennessee. :)
