It's like driving a stick shift on a hill. Or lots of hills. It'd only be a problem if you didn't know what you were doing.

I don't live in SF, but I've spent enough time driving around there.

I dislike driving in Seattle because of the extremely steep hills and avid tailgaters. It's an accident waiting to happen.

i don't live in sf but i've driven through there in a stick. it's pretty much like driving on a bunch of hills. if the guy behind you doesn't stop too close then it should be fine.

I drove stick when I lived in SF. It was not bad - you definitely need to have some good clutch discipline, though, or you will burn them early and often. A lot of it depends on where in the city you live, because it is easy enough to get around, and in and out of, much of the city without contending with any of the really extreme hills there.

I did it for about 25 years. What is the big deal?? Do you think San Franciscan's burn out clutches more often?? I had to change the clutch on my first truck at 100k and twice on my last truck at 80K and 150k. I had to parallel park on a steep incline when I first took my drivers license test the first time driving a stick. No problem here for me...

But I do get a kick watching tourist from out of town drive erratically going up a steep hill from a dead stop using a manual transmission!!

You can hear those engines rev from a block away...

Liberals know how to drive. There are basically four things you try to do, but first Lombard, the famous part, runs down hill one way so it's not a chutch problem spot. First if you have to stop you try to roll onto the flat of the cross street before stopping. If you have to stop on the hill and you know what you're doing, you can get from the break to the gas fast enough not to roll back much. You can use the emergency greal, or if you are a Liberal nad naturally gifted, you can apply the break and the gas at the same time with the same foot as you ease out the clutch.
