I am starting a new job in emeryville soon and was wondering what the commute is like from alameda where i'm thinking about moving. im somewhat afraid of the fact that theres only 3 roads out of alameda and its about a 10 mile commute.

I've lived in los angeles practically my whole life, and i have i no idea what to expect traffic wise anywhere else (i am a los angeles traffic god, xm radio saves my life daily).

that said let me know if the 10 mile commute takes an hour or something. sadly this town peaked my interest because thats where the nuclear wessels are located.

So you live in alameda and work in emeryville? where in alameda

Only 3 ways out of alameda no?

Anyways, try the 260 (tube) to 880 to 580, exit powell. no idea where you work in emeryville.

well i dont live in alameda yet. i'm thinking of moving there for a job in emeryville. have like 3 more weeks to find a place to live.

i just want to know how bad that commute will be.

Uh, why not live in Emmeryville? I used to and it was fine, or Berkeley. Unless it is an off time, the traffic through and around the maze is bad. (Entrance/convergence of all freeways to the bay bridge.)

yeah i have considered it. a lot of places in emeryville are pretty expensive same with berkeley.

berkeley it seems does not have parking at many of its apartment buildings.

i am sure traffic is "Bad" around the 80/580/880 thing but what exactly is bad? my last commute was 8 miles in 40 minutes through hollywood and i thought it was "ok"

i worked in emeryville, and lived in east oakland.. i think it was about 10 miles, and took me roughly 30-40 minutes in morning traffic (left my house at about 8:30 got to work at about 9)... if you're set on alameda, i believe you'll be sitting in similar traffic going up 880... when i take 880s to work at 7am, the traffic is pretty light.. but i dunno how it is further up north... looking at the live traffic map on yahoo it's all green.... i'd recommend you live in berkeley or albany or even west oakland or oakland chinatown... i bet you can find a deal in west oakland..

where are you working?

oh, by the way, to work i was going 580W, so.. yeah, there you go...

oh, edit again... look for some place by bart.. forget driving.. emeryville has a free buss service called "emery-go-round"... so if you work at like.. pixar or somewhere around there, you can take it from the macarthur bart station straight to work

wow that is the best post yet. thanks a lot.

ok ... so that sounds pretty bad since its not accounting for the little bridges on alameda. i suppose alameda sounds safe maybe ill just live in emeryville and walk to work... or live in berkeley..

I live in Oakland and have a general idea, but I've never driven those roads in the same direction you would at the time you will.

The commute shouldn't be too horrible. I don't think the exits from Alameda are too bad. I have no knowledge of this, but haven't heard complaints from people who live there. You'll have to deal with people heading to SF for a chunk of your ride to work, and people coming from SF for a chunk of the ride home because you'll be heading to/from the Bay Bridge. But I really don't think it's awful. Habib89's description sounds right on.

Depending on your budget, you have options for other nice and closer places to live.

i know there's are new condos being built in emeryville.. but those things go for like 800k.. totally not worth it.. i'm sure you can find something reasonable in emeryville or oakland..

I work in Emeryville, where are you going to be working here?

There is a large apartment building in Emeryville I know a lot of people that work in the area live at. There are condos at the mall too, but I imagine they are expensive.

Also, you can pretty much live anywhere along the BART line and work in Emeryville. I live in Fremont and take BART to work. Once you get off at the Macarthur station there is a free service called the Emery-go-round that has buses that take you to the major shopping areas and major business areas.

alameda is a pretty rough town. i think you'd be much better off just living in emeryville and driving down to alameda to visit once in a while, if you really wanted to.

I beg to differ on alameda being a pretty rough town. I live in Alameda and it is one of the safest cities in the Bay area. The Alameda PD is excellent.

The Bay Farm area of Alameda is one of the most expensive and nicest areas to live in the Bay Area. It has two of the best elementary schools (both normally end up in top 5). The housing market is very strong (houses get sold within weeks of being listed) and a very diverse crowd.

The main island is a hit or a miss (depending on where you live - avoid the West end of the island near the Naval base although Bayport and Marina Village are very nice communities......the Central and East end of the island are decent to good) but Bay Farm is a very nice place (Golf course etc). Dont forget, we have excellent weather throughout the year (no need for A/C in the summer) and we have our own little beach and excellent views of the Bay.

Commute from Alameda to Emeryville is ~10-15 min (from main island) to ~20-25 min (from Bay Farm Area) max depending on where you live. The Max. speed limit on the main island is 25mph.

Your commute options from Alameda to Emeryville are as follows:
880 , 80 - can be very busy during commute hours
880, 980, 580 - can be very busy during commute hours
Just go thru the city - Drive within Oakland on Mandela Parkway and it will take you to Emeryville - too many lights.

Again, your commute can be from ~10min - 25min (depending on traffic and where exactly you live in Alameda)

There are ~4 exits from the Main island and the Bay Farm area is connected to the main land. There are 3 main shopping complexes (Southshore - near beach, Marina Village - near Tunnel, and Bay Farm) with one more being built. Got 2 downtown streets with tons of small businesses (Park St (bigger) and Webster St).

The alameda PD sucks ass! These guys know not how to fight crime but are excellent at issueing moving violations for driving 32 mph on a 25 mph road.

I agree that the commute is not too long and normally shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. All you need to do is hop onto 880 north then take 980 junction to get to 80 east and exit in emeryville. You might get stuck at some point trying to merge onto the 80 Eastbound lane though because when you take 980 and exit towards 80 it's a combined roadway to get on San Francisco and Emeryville/Richmond.

LOL...looks like you got a ticket for 32 in a 25 zone 😉. I guess owning a business in the city helps though. The PD has been good to me so far....responded within ~5 min when we needed little help at the business....

and this other time, the guy lets me go off while I was doing ~35-40 in 25 (I think that he knew I was local 😀 ). He didnt pull me off but smiled at me while passing me

Emeryville/Berkeley/Oakland is pretty bad compared to Alameda.
I'd avoid living in Emeryville or Berkeley if at all possible.
