I have a friend who has written lots of stuff (mostly fiction). Personally, I think they're pretty good. Question is, how does he go about getting it published?

His best bet is to try getting an agent. Otherwise, he could always go the self-publishing route or hope for the best and submit his stuff to one of the big publishers.

Hit up some big publishers and try to get signed.

If Ali G can get an idea sold for 50 bucks, then anyone can!

Start out by submitting short stories/chapters to literary publications, it should be easier to get into those than to just get a book published with no prior publication experience.

There are a few good books on how to go about getting published, i cannot think of the titles right now, but they can be found at borders, barnes and Noble too.

i have some books at home i can try and find the titles. I have been published before, didnt make lots of money on it... yet!

Send him to the library to read some issues of "Writer's Digest" and a copy of the book "Writer's Market" (new edition every year).

Like any other profession, there are certain protocols of doing things and he needs to learn them.

Well the first route is agents/publishers. But iuniverse.com - on demand publishing - is not a bad route for a first book. Your stuff gets put on Amazon.com and BN.com, which is pretty good considering. BN will put a book in their stores if it does well on online sales.

This is two separate questions. First, getting published is fairly easy. Second, SELLING your published work requires skill in marketing and sales.

Good luck.

1. write a bunch of material
2. ask an internet forum for advice on how to publish
3. invest life-savings and take out 2nd mortgage for self-publishing
4. file for bankruptcy because you have no money left to shop and distribute product
5. . . .
6. Profit?
