Anyone here know anything about home automation?

I'm asking on behalf of a friend who can't remember which password/e-mail account he used to sign up with AT 😛

Everyone here knows about those X10 products (no, they don't only make cameras for peeps). They also make products for home security and home automation, products that can be networked and accessed via a LAN.

Does anyone know where one can obtain SIMILAR BUT higher quality products than X10? My friend feels, and I agree, that X10 makes cheap crap, and purchasing from them only funds more pop-up ads and such.

Thanks for your input!

It eats baby children, and regurgitates them all over your brand new $500 graphics card.

Oh yeah, and buying it funds terrorism.

I already bought one.

It's a super sweet monitor, S Video input, 1600x1200, retailed for $999 a while ago. It's now $400 off that price!

Bump for OP.

(I'm going to hold off on the LCD until I build a completely new system in Q1 2005. I'd rather spend $600 on a lens for an EOS-20D at this point.)

Worthington Distribution sells a bunch of X10 stuff, including the original X10pro and IBM Homedirector stuff.

LOL. He's not looking for X10 stuff. He's looking for X10-like stuff of better build quality.

Here's a little education for you. X10 is a protocol, when I said Worthington Distribution sells X10 stuff I was refering to the protocol as can be referenced by my reference to the specific products by X10pro and IBM Homedirector. This is something you might have realized if you had actually went to their website and downloaded their catalog and looked at it rather that making a snide comment showing your ignorance about the product. In fact I don't know anyone that has a more thorough catalog of X10 protocol and other automation products.

Now if you are looking for something other than powerline control products you should probably state that, keeping in mind that other protocols may require the pulling of seperate wires to the outlets.

Wow. So X10 Corp. used the name of the protocal as their company name? How misleading! Thanks.

Yes, X10 corp polluted the name. The X10 protocol was invented in the 70's, 74 comes to mind. The first implimentations were incredibly expensive and actually the X10 corp products are some of the cheapest X10 products to be had but other manufacturers build X10 protocol devices. I personally use X10 for my irrigation control using a Rain8 controller and I considered a programable thermostat that was X10 but ended up going with an HAI one so that I can implement an HAI omni system later. But again the X10 corp products are cheap, the firecracker deals were a steal when they were on.
