Anyone here join the Columbia House DVD club???

I've been trying to find a deal on a copy of Scarface, and some others on DVDs with no luck at all. The best price I've found is $24.99 at my local Best Buy, and I don't want to go used, unless a known trader on these forums has it (ebay, and half.com scare me). So I figure my best bet is to get it, and some other more expensive ones (Goodfellas, The Wall maybe???) from Columbia House.

However, they say you need to buy 4 more in the next two years. You can get one right away at $14.95 (I would), but the last three are a big mystery as to what they cost, and how much shipping will be. I'm sure it won't be the $1.99 for shipping they give you at first, and they say the movies start at $19.95.

So I'd like to know if anyone has done this, and if so, what are the prices? Also do they give any good "specials" like they say they will???

Thanks
Andrew

Viper - LMAO. Just write refused on it and drop it in the mailbox.

I belong, but it seems like there's quite a few DVDs they don't carry; I don't know if it is particular movie companies or what. I know they don't have "Aliens", so maybe no 20th Century Fox?

Thanks Viper, but that doesn't answer my question. Besides you can send it back at their expense right?

I'm a member. Their full price prices suck. For example, Gladitor was like $29.00. Plus, shipping in ridiculously expensive, for one little DVD they will charge like $9.99. And don't forget to send in that damn card!! Because they WILL send you the DVD. Of course, when they do, I just write "Refused, return to sender" on it and send it back. I have one DVD left to fulfill my obligation to them. As soon as I do, I'm telling them to stop sending me things.

EDIT: You can get decent deals sometimes though when they have the free offers, or the buy 1 and get one at half price stuff.

I dunno. I opened it. I also have a CD from their CD club that I need to return.

Blech.

:disgust:

Yes, they do have specials... Like right now it's buy one get as many as you want at 40% off, or something like that.

one little DVD they will charge like $9.99.

Either you're crazy or you're doing something wrong.

I got 8 DVDs in the mail the other day; the total bill was something like $126.85.

It's a great deal when they have a buy one/get two at 50% off.

Well, if I was crazy, I'd be a Suns fan. ;)

$9.99 might be exaggerating, but the last DVD I bought from them, they charged me OVER $6.00 to send it. This was for ONE DVD.

And if I were crazy, I'd be hopping the overflowing Lakers bandwagon, trmiv.

When you order multiple DVDs, they send it Priority Mail, which is cheaper, and it gets to you faster.

I've kept track of what I've spent, and I've saved a bit of money over what I would have if I'd bought at the store.

when you first join with the promo, the 4 DVD's that you are required to buy must be bought at their regular price---meaning about 30.00 per DVD. After you buy the required ones, then you can start purchasing them at a more reasonable price and you can get the deals like buy one, get 2 at half price---at least that's the way I understood it.

Good thing, because I hate bandwagoners, and we've been getting a ton of them the past two years.

The worst part is your FIRST selection on any purchase, because that is the one you pay full price on, and of couse, its always the most expensive one. For example, The Bridge over the River Kwai is $39.99 right now. Men In Black is $39.99. So you really have to take advantage of things like the 40% off deals, and buy multiple DVD's to get a good deal.

I honestly wish I wouldn't have signed up. I don't buy enough DVD's to get much benefit from the lower prices by buying multiple DVD's. I think the biggest order I have ever placed is 3 DVD's at once, and that just isn't going to save you anything.

WOW!!!

Thank you so much Vikaden. :)

After reading most of that info, and seeing that a lot of the movies I want are the best ones to get at first anyway has me convinced that it is actually a really good deal if you're careful.

I just can't believe I didn't think to look over at DVD talk! :Q I'm a member there too.

Hmm.. I was wondering about the DVD club also.. but I was just worried over shipping costs.. Then I saw somewhere on their site saying it was $1.99 per DVD, but if that isn't the case, it might not be worth it for me to use them. :(

That's just for the first few, but if you read what Vikaden was kind enough to link us to. You'll see that this can be turned into a really good deal ($9.95 a DVD shipped). Especially when you consider you can pick DVD's (like Scarface ;)) that just can't be had for cheap.

I was reading it too (for quite a while ;)). Once I figured it out, and believe me I was skeptical too, it seems like a good deal IMO.

Hundreds of DVDTalkers have done the Columbia House deal (it's one of the few DVD deals left) and it's definitely legit, not a scam. If you play your cards right you can enlist as a "preferred member" or whatever they call it where they DO NOT mail you a DVD every month. All the information you could ever possibly want is in this thread. DVDTalkers have fine tuned the art of DVD Bargains to perfection.

You can avoid the DVD every month by logging in, entering your online code, and selecting 'do not send me Director's Selection'. After you fulfill your membership reqs, just send an e-mail to customer service and they will cancel your account within a week.
