If so I have a question...

What would be a rough estimate for putting a sliding glass door in on the second story of a house, and putting up a say a 12' x 20' deck off of it?

The sliding door itself is under $1k at Lowes. I couldn't see the lumber being over $1k either. So I guess the question is labor.

How much did Lowes quote you for installation?

If there's never been one there before, the opening has to be framed in, and particular attention paid to how and where, because that's a load-bearing wall, Any alteration could cause a weak point in that wall. You'll need extra upright studs and probably at least a 4X6 header across the top of the opening. (may have to be 4X8..don't know the codes)

As for the deck, you'll probably want to build that out of redwood or cedar to withstand the weather. OR, there is engineered "imitation lumber" made for decking that is more environmentally friendly and withstands the weather better.
In any event, yes, labor costs will probably be as much or more than the actual materials cost.

ballpark the door will probably run you 1k for the install. I wouldnt be surprised if the deck costs you 3k if they supply the materials(CCA)

I haven't got an estimate. I was just thinking about it. There is already a double set of 30" windows where I would put the door, so those come out and provide a start.
