Anyone here in the bulk shipping business, or shipped a pallet before?

My parents have to sell their house and I can't come up and get my stuff until this summer, which is quite possibly too late. I was considering flying up, palletizing my crap- it would only take one pallet, average weight. Then having it trucked down here.

Details:
MA to TX (1700mi)
Loading docks at both locations
Time is not an issue
1 Pallet, fairly light

Anyone ever done this before? Cost is a big factor.

shipping freight in general is usually pretty pricey. I would call Fed Ex and see what they offer. But it would go on weight

I work in air cargo, and we move lots of pallets, including some on trucks. But, we are only in Alaska. What I suggest is, find a reputable trucking company and inquire what it would cost for what you have. If you have one pallet of household goods, then it will probably weigh anywhere from 500 to 1000 pounds, as that's the average weight of our HHG pallets. Just tell them you'll have one pallet @ xxx lbs. THey should be able to provide a quote.

Be sure to wrap your pallet well because it can shift a lot during movement. YOu don't want the things you've stacked on top to slide off. A packing store should carry what looks like big, heavy-duty Seran wrap that can be used for this purpose.

Another option to consider is to talk to trucking companies about bundling your shipment with other shipments to the same region. That way, you don't carry the entire cost of an entire truck. In most cases, the trucking company will do this anyway, but if you don't ask about it, they will charge you for the full price of teh rtuck.

Holy crap, FedEx freight wants $2300! Their fuel surcharge alone is almost as much as an all-inclusive quote from BAX Global at $469.

What is this 'Class' selection?

Yeah, you don't even want to consider air freight since you live on the road system. Definitely have it trucked, by a trucking company.

"Class" can refer to several things. It can either mean service class, which would be scheduled or charter; but that's probably for air freight only. More likely it's like first class/second class/priority/whatever. i.e. How quickly do you want it to ship?

How 'bout this... if you're going to fly up there to pack the stuff up anyway, you can probably rent one of those U-Haul trucks... a small one... and drive it back yourself. Spend a few days on the open road. I don't know what that would cost compared to a trucking company though.

My first plan now is to take a trailer up and back, running on 50-70 cent per gallon biodiesel that I'm producing myself. Flying is very expenive, as I don't have any money, or I won't after I buy the car this week and set up my BD processor. Insurance is the killer. My parents obviously live in another state so I don't think I can pull off the old 'My dad is the primary driver' trick. Geico is quoting me $1k/6mo.
