I'm thinking about joining the Air Force next year. I'll be getting married in September, so it will probablly be 3-4 months after that. I'm looking for someone who has experience in the tech part of the AF. How is it? Would you do it again? Give me the rundown of what happened when you signed up.

Also, what are the protocols for a married couple living on base? I'm sure they will be a waiting list, but s it worth it? I'm pretty much just looking for any info here.

Anyone with any knowledge care to share? :)

I served four years. All of which I was married. Go talk to a recruiter and don't believe anything he says. PM if you want the down and dirty on some questions they ask. First you take the ASVAB. Hopefully you score high enough to be able to get just about any job you want. Then decide on a job. Don't sign anything until you are guaranteed a job. I was guaranteed Space Systems Specialist. Dealing with satellites. It was pretty cool stuff.

As for the base thing. I was in Denver and there wasn't base housing at the time. But if there is, it's definately worth it. You can't beat free housing. Depending on where you are, you can't find anything better with your allowance.

Also, if you have any college, make sure you get that info to the recruiter. You can enlist at a higher rank with certain amounts of credits.

I know a couple guys who go to the AF academy in Colorado Springs. It's ridiculous what benefits they get over there. :|

Are you looking to enlist, or have you completed a bachelor's degree (making you eligible to be commissioned as an officer)? I am an AF officer and love it, but I know there are a lot of current and former enlisted folks here who can offer you more specific advice on enlisted service.

As for the housing, most bases have a shortage of accompanied base housing, so you would place your name on a list for base housing and live off-base for some period of time. There are pros and cons to each. (You can probably have a nicer place on base than you will be able to afford with your housing allowance, but obviously you are not building equity.)

I'm waiting for an interview as an AF Officer...turned in the application last week. I posted this question a few weeks ago; do a search for "Air Force" in Off Topic.
