Anyone here have Sprint as a carrier and have iphone 5/c/s ?

Have a quick question.

Does it require a sim card to activate and use on the sprint network? Or can it be activated by using the MEID//ESN?

I think it might need both. I got my phone replaced about a year ago, and I remember having to be on the phone with Sprint to activate it.
