Anyone here have port and polish work on their motor?

Yes I know this a misnomer but the name has stuck. 😛 If you have it, was it worthwhile? What kind of car/engine, what other mods.

I'm thinking about getting this done on a 4 cylinder accord. It's not fast, probably high 15s or so, but it's not that expensive of a mod either. This place was recommended on other forums.

Supposedly this works best on american V8s because their heads don't flow as well relatively speaking, but ITRs came with p&p heads done by hand at the factory so smaller engines must also benefit.

You have to get more air flow to and from the head before a port and polish is going to do anything for you.

Start with your induction system and then replace your exhaust manifold.

Put a coffe can on your tail-pipe and I'll hunt you down.

It sort of has an intake already and I will order a header soon. No one makes a fart can for this car yet (yes I briefly looked 😛) so I'll probably take it to a muffler shop and just have them cut out the exhaust resonator. It'll look completely stock on the outside, I don't care for attention from cops either.

p&p will be after all that. I can have the intake manifold ported also if need be, the cost is just another $100 or so.

If you?re going to port and polish the heads you might as well change the cam to take advantage of the increased airflow. Don?t forget to have the Intake and exhaust manifolds port matched with the heads. You might want to get the computer tweaked to match up with the mods you made. 🙂

In the 'old' days, a port and polish could benefit as much as 15% as long as you also took care of increased air:fuel needs with a carbuerator mod. This was primarily due to the casting process being so poor.

Ultra modern casting processes have almost made this practice a waste of time. Generally, if you are going to go into the heads for a port & polish, you want to upgrade the camshaft & valves ... of course upgrading the computer programming to account for increased air flow.

I've done internal motor modifications, superchargers and turbos and at the level you are talking ... If I had the money to spend and was looking for a go-fast upgrade, I would go for a 25 or 50 shot of nitrous. It won't change the character of the car at all, except when you push the button.

I did my heads, intakes, and exhaust.

With a dremel, a flexible extension, a set of gaskets and some TIME, you can easily do it yourself.

Of course mine is a air-cooled VW, and they are EASY to work on in the first place. 🙂

WHat year accord?

For 90-93 Accords it's a pretty good mod, especially for the price. If you're looking for some gains without FI, that'll be one of the best mods you can do in terms of horsepower per dollar ratio
