I follow lot of youtube channels, mostly technical vlogs or project vlogs. It's kind of cool to see teardowns of stuff, or people's projects etc. It got me thinking it would be fun to start my own too, but I don't really have a personality for it, at least I don't think. It also feels awkward talking to a camera. I wonder if that's something that you simply get better at over time though and get over the awkwardness. I do have a channel I occasionally post non vlog style videos on but I'm lucky if I get 10 views, but I'm thinking the algorithm seems to favour vlog style videos so maybe I'd have better luck?

Curious if anyone here has started one and felt the same when they first started, but got better at it, and did you actually get a decent amount of views after a while? I'm not even sure what I would make mine about, I think it would be kind of random stuff, but mostly projects. Like building stuff, projects around the house, or what not. I think it would also push me to actually work on projects since I'd know it means it will give me content to upload. Like I'd like to get into building drones, planes etc eventually. I could set myself a goal, like at least 1 video every two weeks, then maybe increase to 1 per week. Though what I'd probably try to do is make several videos in one shot on my days off then release them on a schedule. This is details I'd figure out as I go along.

Just curious if anyone here does this and how well it goes? i don't expect to make any money off this (Youtube demonetized all small channels a while back) but it would be cool to at least try to gain an audience and give a new hobby to work on.

I haven't, but am considering starting a Gaming Channel. I don't know if I'm suited to do it, but from what I have seen from other channels people usually start off real ruff and get better over time.

VLOGs usually are on camera, but they don't have to be. You could always just show some kind of semi interesting footage of something and VLOG if you are uncomfortable.

DO IT. You typed this much about it. I'm sure you'll get better.... but only if you do it.

Yeah I think I might give it a shot and do a couple no-upload videos just for practice and if I feel that I want to keep going then I'll upload. I need to buy a bit of video equipment but won't spend too much on it yet. Mostly just accessories like mini clamp or squid tripod to be able to stick camera/phone in different spots etc and maybe some lights. Might make my own with LED COBs. Won't buy any of that until I made a few videos though.

If I feel I want to keep going then I'll get a dedicated video camera for the main shots and maybe a couple Gopro Sessions or similar cams for alternate shots. Cool thing with Gopros is they are small and can be stuck in interesting places to get cool shots. I was kinda messing around with fun camera views when I made this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WAehZuDFLw It's done with my DSLR and my phone.

Meh, the best I did was just a couple million views once when it went viral: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

That's a good sign, seems gingers might have a special touch when it comes to doing Youtube. :p

Lol he seriously should! Probably more interesting than anything I plan to put out.

We could do a colab at some point where he flies over to my city and we diagnose an issue with my furnace or air conditioner and it turns into a DIY style video with him ranting about his nephew as we fix stuff.

It's crazy to go back to the beginning of some of these big YTbers and see their humble beginnings. Marques Brownlee, Linus Tech are two that come to mind. Linus just hit 6M subs. Marques has 6M as well.

Who would had thought that they would do so well.

Early Linus was so awkward. Kinda funny to look back at his early stuff.

Yep. I was watching a review that he did on the logitech G13. That was about 6 years ago. BTW, Logitech just stopped producing he G13, and the price shot up from $50 to over $200.

No but I sub to a ton of channels, some of which put out typical "vlog" type videos. Everyone in them though has some degree of charisma and they're interesting to watch because they can speak well and tell good stories or rely information. They've definitely gotten better over time though, every one of them.

I'd say go for it if you've been thinking about it. From what I remember from here, you're pretty good with DIY stuff so I'd go that route if I were you, doing projects around the house and whatnot like you said. I've sometimes thought it might be neat to do some videos but I'm a boring loser that no one would want to watch anyway so I just watch them myself.

Production values can sometimes make up for a lack of "charisma", although they can only go so far. There are many channels where the presenter is knowledgeable, but has little personality or speaking ability.

I follow a number of channels where the videos get no more than a few dozen views. It's more for the person doing the posting than anything else. They get a little recognition, maybe a few comments - some acknowledgement of their existence. A little bit like some of the participants in this forum.

Sooo I decided to pull the trigger. Uploaded two videos, I got a few more pending but I want to spread them out more. Like one every two weeks or so. I might run out of content to do at times or get busy with long stretches of work shifts, so I want to try to always have a queue of videos I can release on a semi regular basis. I'm aiming for maybe 1 video every 2 weeks. Once I get better I might do 1 per week. This will mostly be a project vlog, but might do other random stuff too and throw in non vlog videos in the mix as well like drone flights or what not.

I feel I sound kinda awkward but maybe I'll get better with time. Talking on camera is the part I had the most issue with but figured I would just push myself and just do it. The worse thing that can happen is that I really decide I don't want to do this and end up deleting the videos, but at least I tried.
