Anyone here have a terrarium ?

The owner of the shop bought several display cases from a jewelry store that was going out of business when we first moved to our new location. Now she has decided she has one too many and is giving me one. (I get my pick)

I've decided to take the only one that has glass on three sides as well as the top. It's six feet long, about twenty inches deep and twenty tall. (the glass case that is) The back side has two sliding doors with a area about 20 X 20 that has no door access. The glass case sits atop a rather nice black walnut base with two more sliding doors giving access to two shelves in the back. (hard to envision I know, I'll post some pics tomorrow)

Anyway, it's NICE, and I thought it would make a GREAT terrarium. After sealing it up well and doing a few modifications, I plan on putting in some soil and plants and maybe frogs or lizards. I also thought of doing a pool at one end with a rock waterfall feeding the pool.

Anyone ever done anything like this before?

Edit: I forgot to mention it also has a florescent light that runs the entire length of it.

It's COOL! 🙂

do you need special stones or soil mix, to stop all the water collecting & plant roots rotting in the base of the terrarium? you need lots of moss, right?

Hmmmm, when I recall some of my earliest memories it seems that my parents may have had one 30 years ago.

It sat right next to their quadraphonic stereo.

Once it's all sealed up, I'll add rocks then gravel before the soil. That way the roots can breath and they wont rot.

I used to be BIG into house plants. And can still keep them alive. (somewhat) Terrariums are actually much easier to maintain, once you have them setup. Assuming of course you do it right. 😉
