I started a low carb diet this past Saturday and a month before that I started lifting weights again (cardio too). So I'm hoping the combination of weght training, almost daily cardio and low carb eating will really help me cut the fat and build up muscle. I read that it takes about 48 hours to get into ketosis, but when I checked this morning I was disappointed to find out I had'nt reached that state yet.

So for you people who are on or who have tried a low carb diet what were the results?

Were you working out during the course of the diet? (weightlifting, cardio, both, etc..)

What did you eat? I'm currently doing lots of green veggies (spinach, brocoli, celery, greens, etc..) and different types of meat (ground beef, chicken breast, wings, turkey burgers, etc..). I'm also drinking tons of water so I really hope a few weeks of this will result in weight loss very shortly.

First off, good luck with your diet. I started a low carb diet a few years ago and was extremely successful. In about 7-9 weeks, I dropped 24 lbs, but gained 10 lbs of solid muscle, while my BMI was around 13%. My meals would consist of a variety of items ranging from poultry to alot of fresh fish and a variety of salad. Make use of a bbq grill if you have one. While on the low carb diet, workout religiously and you'll be set. What are your goals?

I'll contribute more to this thread later as I just got into work..

alot of people will probably flame you for doing it, but I have found it very successful. dropped 20 pounds and I no longer eat sugar. I don't follow and particular 'diet' I just stopped eating white carbs and sugar.

I seriously doubt you gained 10 lbs of muscle in as little time as 9 weeks, especially of you lost 24 lbs overall.

Low carb is good, as long as you go low fat as well... Since there is low carb and low fat, the only thing left is Protein! The ultimate diet breakdown is usually referred to as 40-40-20, meaning that 40% of your calories come from Carbs, 40% from Protein and 20% from Fat. There are 4 calories per Gram of Carbohydrate, 4 calories per Protein Gram and a whopping 9-10 calories per Gram of Fat.

Also, make sure you eat 5-6 meals a day, averaging ~400 calories a piece.

And how do you justify your comments?

Because it takes longer than 9 weeks to gain 10 lbs of muscle unless you are on the juice. It's not impossible, especially of you are an adolscent but it is highly unlikely. On top of that you were on a restricted caloric diet (which accounts for the 24 lbs of weight loss) and it takes calories to build muscles.

Well, The 24lbs lost occurred witin 3 weeks, I was running quite a bit (2-3 miles_ every other day. When I stopped running, I got into HIT mode, then hit the weights hardcore. I also took supplements like a good quality VM, Calcium, drank a ton of protein shakes. To be honest- its very doable.

24 lbs lost in 3 weeks and then 10lbs of pure muscle added in the proceeding 6 weeks?:roll:Not even Barry Bonds, Jose Conseco or Mark Mgwire could claim that type of physical improvement in such a short time.

I think you should make your Bullsh!t more believable like saying you lost 24 lbs in 9 weeks and then it took a year to gain 10 lbs of lean muscle.

You see this the problem, people looking to get into shape hear BS like this and they get discouraged because they can't get the same results. People it didn't take a couple of months for you to get in bad shape, your shouldn't expect to get into good shape in a matter of a couple of months. It takes patience and dedication along with a change in your lifestyle.

I agree with Red Dawn, there is no way you gained that much muscle in such a short period of time. Pro Bodybuilders are happy to gain that in almost a year and they on the sauce all year!

Arkitech, don't listen to this clown, I believe he's one of those who lives vicariously through the internet. If you want some good advice listen to Koing, Amused, edro13 and others who know what they are talking about. I believe edro13's routine would be a good one for you to follow. Like you he started out chubby and out of shape and he has since lost that weight and has become fairly ripped (and it took more than 9 weeks). His experience is verifiable unlike this kiddie gscone

24lbs of fat loss in 21 days ?

To lose 1kg of fat you need to burn 9000 calories that you didn't eat.
you're saying you burned ~ 4600 calories a day everyday for 21 days ?

Running a marathon uses about 3-4000 calories depending on your body size.

10lbs of muscle in 6 weeks is the same as converting all the protien in a 400g tin of tuna (about 108g) to muscle every day for 6 weeks.

If you ate 200g of protien a day then your claiming > 50% conversion rate to muscle ?

Schwarzenegger was a genetic freak and i'm pretty sure not even he could claim that.

Correct- 24 lbs weight loss- Ever consider a good chunk of that could be water weight?

i didn't even read this thread, just the original post.

i did a low carb diet last summer for like 3 weeks. i would take < 30g carbs monday - friday, and on the weekends do whatever i wanted. i would eat a lot of fat but very low carbs. i was by no means fat when i started this diet, but i did it to get extremely cut. it worked well.

however it has its bad effects too. you said you are going to lift weights still and do cardio. well if you dont eat carbs, you are not goign to have any energy. trust me, i know from experience. i lost a good amount of strength in this 3 weeks just because i did not have the energy to do my usual workouts. i lost probably 10-20lbs in my bench press. i also lost a little muscle doing this and looked smaller, although i did look more cut. i couldn't do cardio for long either. i just all around felt like i had less energy.

after 3 weeks though people told me i looked too skinny so i stopped it. i weight 170lbs at that time. as the spring is coming back now, i am trying to get cut up again. however i'm definnitely not going to do the low carb diet this time around because i don't want to lose that much weight, and i can lose the same amount of fat by just eating a different way and doing cardio.

i honestly don't think low card diets are healthy UNLESS YOU ARE REALLY BIG AND WANT TO LOSE A LOT OF WEIGHT!! but if you are just trying to lose a quick few pounds, i don't think its that healthy, beause it comes r ight back after you are done with the diet.

I seriously doubt you gained 10 lbs of muscle in as little time as 9 weeks, especially of you lost 24 lbs overall.

It worked for me, so I could care less about your lame comments. If you are unable to contribute wisely to the OP on this thread, get out of here. I can understand now why your thread count is outrageously high.

I agree with Red Dawn, there is no way you gained that much muscle in such a short period of time. Pro Bodybuilders are happy to gain that in almost a year and they on the sauce all year!

yAWN..

i agree with red dawn and britboy as well. its not physically possible.

do you realize that losing weight and gaining muscle are %100 opposites? one of them requires you to ADD calories to your diet, one requires you to REMOVE calories from your diet. it just isn't physically possible.

regardless of what all this crap people talk about, the only way you will lose weight is if ..

calories taken < calories expended

you are saying you did the two extreme opposites at one time, by losing 24lbs (which is a SIGNIFICANT amount) and gaining 10lbs of muscle (which is a SIGNIFICANT amount as well) at the same time. i don't buy it. pics = proof.

Not really wanting to beat this horse any more into the ground I'll say not to bother. Low carb is a big fad that the majority of people have no business dealing with. It is a valid method of weight loss, at least short term, and one that's been used by bodybuilders for years. Done properly it requires significant inner strength--more than the average, diet-unconscious person has. IMO If you lack the conviction and will to do it with a more conventional low calorie approach, low carb won't be any better for you. The stats bear this out, too.

Weights + cardio + eating smaller & frequent meals = weight loss. I know this because I've done it, and so have a million other people. It's so freaking straight forward.

I originally thought that a lot of it must be due to water loss, but I still couldn't get the numbers to add up.

If 1/2 of the weight loss was water, thats 10 pints of fluid. Being that de-hydrated isn't fun. You'd still have to burn an extra 2300 calorie a day for 3 weeks to lose the extra fat. That either means not eating at all, or eating and buring every single calorie you ate as exercise.

David Blaine lost 24 lbs by starving himself for 44 days (which probably equated to around a 2300 calorie a day deficit after his metabolism slowed) and drinking very little.
You claim to have done it in 1/2 the time while eating and running every other day.

For what its worth, the record weight loss for a male is 57 lbs in 31 days. (38lbs in 3 weeks)
John Munich Brown was 100st and had his 14,000 calorie a day intake cut to 1200.
Doctors failed to mention how much was attributed to 'water loss'..
