anyone have a standalone GPS system? I have the worst sense of direction, and would like to buy a GPS system preferably that talks, does anyone know of any? Or i may consider building a car-puter.

hmm, i don't know that a GPS will compensate for a poor sense of direction. if i were to guess, it would only confuse you more.

the setup in the gs and ls are pretty good
apparantly you can mod it or something to play dvds too
when we went the chick at the dealership was talking about it

I am also in same situation with bad direction sense. And i am planning to go for a road trip.
So what is the price range of the standalone GPS ?
How about a handhled one or a USB one? Which one actually works better or economically better ?

handhelds are pretty cheap, a couple hundred but they dont give step by step directions, they just give you a map and show you where you are located, so that might not be the best option if your driving and have to figure out the map on a 3-4 inch screen.

I have heard of this also. My dad has an LS 430 and was wondering if anyone knew the steps that you need to take in order to make this posible. Thanks for the help.

I had a $300 stand alone garmin GPS. Nothing fancy - didn't even have turn by turn directions.. I have a terrible sense of direction and it REALLY helped me from getting lost.. In fact, it improved my sense of direction and I no longer use it.. Want to buy it?

I have a navigation system in my car, its a neat toy. It has a map and it shows where you are heading and what direction so you can see what turns are ahead. Also you can program an address into it and it will try to find the "best route" kinda like mapquest. If you use this it kinda goes like this

"1/2 mile ahead turn left"
"left turn"
etc..

The Garmin Street Pilot III is probably your best bet for aftermarket in-car GPS. It has step by step voice directions, route replotting (ie: you miss a turn, it finds the way around), and a color screen.

It's not cheap though. Expect to spend 600-800 on it. Check Ebay, thats where they seem to be the cheapest.

A pocket PC one may or may not do voice directions, plus the screen is going to be harder to see. The Garmin attaches right to your dash, so it's easier to see.
