I'm not talking about just-for-fun sites like personal pages but sites that earn you money?

Those were during the gravy train days just before the dotcom bust.

GottaDeal.com is profitable through various means and will be moving to a web host (Dual XEON, 2GB RAM, 2x36GB located at Global Compass/CyberWurx) within a week.

I have several sites that earn good money. Last year they brought in over 70k before taxes. This is my primary business and source of income; in addition, I do a little programming and consulting on the side for a select few clientele.

I don't know how sites survive off of advertising. I mean there are some popular sites that can pull in some good money that way, but your average site? I can't think that most are making more than $100.00 a month or something. Which is good enough to pay for the server, but doesn't really put anything in your pocket.

I've never used any advertising on my sites. I suppose I should, but I've got too many other details to take care of that generate more income than ads. Besides, I like to use the available space for my own promotions, etc.

Referral links.

Notice all the "helpful" Amazon Friday Sale and other link posts in Hot Deals from accounts created just recently and with no other posts? If you "view source" or "copy shortcut" and paste into notepad you'll see an ID code mixed in with the product link. If you click the link and buy something the linker gets a cut.

A site like GottaDeal.com is open about what it's doing and is providing the service of finding and gathering together legitimate deals for you in exchange for their fee. Some of the new-account people in Hot Deals post links to shady vendors, unreliable webhosters or outright scams just to get some coin.
