i have a gift certificate to buy.com that i need to spend. i don't really want to have to shell out any extra dough, so i was browsing thru their site looking for stuff i might want. i saw that they had some camera tripods. i was thinking about getting this one. is that a decent price, or am i bending over to be raped? btw, whats the difference between geared and gearless lift? is one better than the other?

<< am i bending over to be raped? >>

well, technically, rape is non-consentual. so what you're describing isn't rape. HA.

I bought one of those from CC a couple of years ago for my digcam. Its a great tripod and well worth the money. When it says it has a "geared elevator crank" it just means you can hand crank it to get it to move up or down.

I have an ambico tripod I bought from this dude who was leaving the country.

It's ok, holds the camera, not sure what else there is to do.

If you're talking about a still camera and you're not doing anything heavy-duty with it, then that will be a fine tripod. I have an inexpensive SLIK tripod that does just fine for still photographs. If you are going to use it for video or for a lot of outdoorsy stuff (like my friend who has a 20x birdwatching scope that he takes almost everywhere on a tripod) then I would reccommend something much heavier-duty like a Bogen tripod. Bogens are expensive though, $130 for the cheapest tripod plus another $30 for the cheapest mount. On the other hand, they last basically forever.

I'm with Zenmervolt. My father has that Ambico and for the money, it was pretty good until the leg locks started to wear. It's pretty much junk now, but it served him well for 2 years or so. That was with a pretty big camcorder though.
