Me and the wife were thinking about getting a dog. Someone she works with is giving away puppies. The mother was full Bloodhound and the father is half german shepherd and half lab.

I know plenty about labs and shepherds, but never really been around a Bloodhound. I know they are wonderful dogs, but anyone have any comments on them or experience with them? Are they good with children and other pets?

I figure this dog will grow up to be 100 - 125 pounds.

Any info will be appreciated.

My mom has a full bloodhound. She would be a good dog if she was worked with. Shes pretty big, but I wouldnt say 100 - 125lbs. Its fun to watch her though, she has to be one of the clumbsiest dogs I've ever seen.

Yeah, they say that they are hard to train, but its possible. I am hoping with the half lab/shepherd in it that it will be a bit more trainable.

Thanks.

i think i've heard they are prone to a certain kind of health problem but can't think of what it is.

My bloodhound died a couple months ago :brokenheart:

They are FUN dogs, but very very active. Do not get unless you have a big back yard. Also they are not good house dogs as they have a very oily coat and drool like you wouldn't believe.

Mine died from it's stomach turning over inside it's body.

They are also prone to getting run over because they follow their nose into the street. You have to have a big fenced in yard for certain.

Mine was great with my daughter (5), but for some reason was really protective over the food bowl with my other dog.

Most dogs are prone to some heath problems. Bloat and hip dysplasia are common in bloodhounds.

Yeah, they are good on the straightaways but don't corner very well. Mine weighed about 130 when he was healthy.

lol not my moms. She also had a male golden retriever. It's so funny, when we put food in their bowls the bloodhound likes to dump the food out of the bowl everywhere then run off with the bowl.

My parents have one. She is a bit dumb but overall is a good dog. She isn't noisy or oily but the drooling thing is certainly true and very disgusting. Her favorite thing seems to be getting a drink which multiplies the drool by a factor of 1000 and then come over to you to get petted sloppering all over you in the process. They have to keep a towl near the water bowl and try and wipe her face every time she drinks.
