Anyone here have 3 gigs of ram in your computer?

It performs the same as 1gb unless you're using over 1gb, in which case it would perform much better than 1gb. But most people don't use anywhere near that much, so it isn't going to make much of a difference. 😛

I consider myself a heavy multitasker, will typically have 30 IE windows and myriads of other things open, and I'll regularly use ~500mb.

The only time you would ever need over a gb is if it's a server, or you're doing some intense 3d or video editing work....

Jeebus, I have one stick of 128 in my PC, what the hell are you guys doing with your PC's that you need so much memory ?

I use some 3D programs that need a lot of memory. Right now I have 1.5 gigs and frequently use over a gig. I'm probably going to bump it up to 2 gigs. I definately don't need more than that though.

You would definately notice a difference if you rose that to 256mb, perhaps unless you regularly only have one or two things open at a time. Windows typically gobbles up around 120mb, especially XP.

Right now, I have.. Trillian, ICQ, Yahoo, CloneCD, Norton AV, DU Meter, Rage3D Tweak, Virtual Daemon Virtual CDRom drive open in the system tray,

28 IE windows, Eudora, Adobe Reader, Sonique2, 2 Yahoo chats, 2 AIM(trillian) chats, command prompt, Photoshop, and calculator open on the taskbar.. lol

Using 424mb.

ya right now i have 1.5gb in my dell, and i use up to 1.2 gb frequently, i'm thinking about buying two sticks of 1gb locally but dont know if i should or not....

I noticed a huge difference going from 256-512 just surfing and opening/closing windows.

Not as much from 512-768, but a little, and zero when I went to the current 1 gig.

I'm nowhere near using as much stuff as Eli, though.

ok, why the f*** would you have 28 IE windows open?! All different threads on some forum or 28 different pages?

A couple of threads..

Mostly just other pages that I was visiting. I typically reboot about once a month, and I never close anything unless I am truely done with it.. as in, won't need it or want to look at it again for at least 12 hours.

What is the point in having a jiggahertz machine with a zillion kilobytes of ram if you aren't ever going to use it? 😕

I don't really game, so.. heh.

I tried it, I didn't like it. I'm too used to alt-tabbing. 😛

I think a buddy of mine has 2 gigs but no one I know has 3 gigs.

its a bit superfluous after 1.5 gigs i think to add more memory.

The only machines I have ever seen with more than 1.5gb have been our servers at work which are typically either database servers or terminal servers.

We have one PC with 4GB RAM, several with 2GB RAM.
It is mainly used for programming (3D walkthrough, volume rendering black hole, rendering 3D scan datasets, ...).
Sometimes, when we need more RAM for our programs (big matrix manipulation, 3D reconstruction), we borrow machine
time from neighboring lab with 64GB RAM (this one is not a PC, it is a SGI machine).
