Gotta pack, woman says house has to be spotless before we leave, car has to be spotless before we leave, can't just stay in a cheap motel, has got to be a 'good' hotel that costs twice as much (for me it isn't about where you sleep it is about what you do), your other half wants a step by step itenerairy (I'm more of a wanderer), etc.

Sheesh.

I'd rather just rent some movies.

I took a vacation with the wife before getting married for those exact same reasons. And I totally agree with you:

1. Why clean the house? Ain't nobody gonna be there. And if it's messy, would-be theives may trip and break their necks while your gone; the messiness is actually protecting your possessions.

2. I spend ~6 hours a day in the hotel - sleeping, with my eyes CLOSED. The walls could be covered with butt-fvcking scenes from gay pr0n for all I care - if it makes the room cheaper.

3. I HATE having a schedule for a vacation. If I wanted that, I'd take a vacation at work. Or go to a Boot Camp. Or vacation with my in-laws. I swear that woman has "sit on toilet, take crap, wipe fat ass" scheduled on her Palm Pilot twice a day.

AnandTech moderator isn't so picky. He/She will let you go on vacation without packing first, they'll clean everything up for you, too.

I would, but the only suitable one is married, I believe. :(

Nope, I love it, and if I don't do it at least once a year, I start to go crazy.

But my wife does the same thing; when I was single, a nap at a rest stop or a cheap room was good enough for me, but she's gotta have a private cabin or "honeymoon" type suite with a hot tub or jacuzzi. I don't mind that so much (although it costs three times as much), but I totally agree that the whole "plan every minute" thing sucks all the fun out of a roadtrip.

I love vacations. Preparing for travel sucks ass but generally we go in with the intent to just relax and have a good time. No pressure to see and do all sorts of stuff. Vacations rule!

Sounds like your wife is the one in control. We never have guides or expensive hotels, and to be honest we'd never want one.

I don't mind having the house and cars cleaned up. AFAIC, it should be like that all the time anyway.

I'd rather cough up the extra $50.00 for a clean hotel as well.

But, I'd rather not spend any of the money to travel or be a tourist. I find it amusing that people spend so much money on their home, including mortgage, taxes, cleaning, remodeling, building entertainment centers, swimming pools, wet bars, saunas, hot tubs and pool tables, then, when they get time to enjoy it, they go "on vacation"!

My last vacation was July 1994.

Visited Connecticut and the Adirondacks.

That is all I wanted.

My parents insist on going on vacation each and every year.

I find it boring half the time. I'd much rather just save the money for 2-3 years and go somewhere exciting like Italy. I don't see the point of packing, spending $1000+ on a little cottage (parents arent happy with just a hotel room, they insist on having a kitchen, seperate bedrooms, etc) and going on a vacation to Virginia. When I was younger I'd love going on vacation to go to amusement parks, but now I find the heat and waiting hours on lines to not be worth it for 2-3 minutes of enjoyment, and they get really expensive as well.

So overall, I'd rather not go on a yearly vacation. Alot of work, and I wind up playing video games and wishing I had the Internet anyway. I'd rather save up and go somewhere in Europe, or spend the money elsewhere where its needed.

Try going on vacation with three kids. After you get back from vacation you need a vacation...;)

Three kids in a car? Sounds like fun. :D

Assuming they're young, IMO I'd just go on short trips with them, and maybe take a small vacation somewhere yourself, and have a relative watch the kids.

I prefer road trips. The act of getting there is usually more enjoyable to me than the time I spend "there".

As for cleaning the house, it's more about the feeling when you walk into your house after a week or two away and can just fall on the couch and say, "Ahhhhh..."

It's different when you go to Southwest Wyoming's largest ball of bellybutton lint versus really experiencing the world.
