I know two or three people who have had it done. They consider the procedure to have improved their quality of life.

i did it. don't know if it's necessarily CHanged my life, but it's made it much easier. i use to hate contacts and they were a pain int he butt. also i notice much less headaches than i ever use to get.

i went to Boxer Wachler in Beverly Hills, CA. Slightly (ok, a lot) over priced, but he was very qualified and i felt super safe, which is #1. Make sure u feel confident with ur doctor, cuz ur awake THE WHOLE TIME!! Freaky stuff!

My auto repairman did it... he said it was one of the best things he has done for himself. It's been a few years and no complications whatsoever.

My eye doctor sends everybody up to Montreal (I live in CT), to get the procedure done. He says it costs half as much up there.

I was considering it, but I know several people who have had there poor eyesight return as they got older.

Once you hit your 40's your eyesight will get worse and you will need reading glasses nothing can prevent that.
You focus point moves further out as you age that being said I had it done and hope to get about 10-15 years before I need reading glasses.
Everyone I know hwo has had it done has had no complaints, about 10 people

well from what i know...

alot of the laser-eye surgery has lifetime warranty...

so if ur eye sight starts to get bad again...they will have it redone for you free of charge..

but some cheaper places dont offer this lifetime warranty.... i think its quite important to have it.

Everyone I know who's had it done loved it. Mrsskoorb got it done a few years back - $3k CAN at a good clinic - costs really are much less in Canada than in the US.

My brother is an Opthamologist and he does it for $1500.00 for both eyes. i think he has the best prices around. he did my eyes and my wifes and we're both good. he's very qualified and is very good at what he does.

how old do you have to be to get it done? Is there a risk of getting it too early?

I've had glasses since I was 15, and I just got contacts like 3 months ago. I'm 18, is that too young?

No compnent doctor will do the surgery on you because you are too young and your eyes may have some time to grow/mature/whatever they do.

I have had it done and consider it the best thing I have ever done.

Here is some information about "laser-eye surgury":

There are two common procedures LASIK and LASEK. LASIK is the one that everyone thinks about commonly in which they cut a "flap" in the cornea and then "shave" under the flap. In this procedure the healing time is much less (a day or two) since it essentialy just has to heal around the edges of the flap. It is also the least costly of the procedures and usually runs aroun $1500-$1600 from a good doctor. LASEK is the procedure that I had done. LASEK has to be done when the cornea is too thin to alow for both the reshaping and the flap. So the procedure is done without the flap, instead doing the reshaping right there on the surface. The healing time is closer to 1-1.5 weeks and many doctors will not do both eyes at the same time. My eyes were done one week apart and by the second week I was seeing quite well and had 20/20 by the third week after the first surgury. Because the surguries are done at seperate times and the more office visits are required LASEK costs between $2000-$2200. NOTICE: These prices are in the midwest and prices on the east or west cost may differ.

The need for glasses at a later age in life is caused my presbyopia and in no way has to do with laser surgury. Presbyopia is the aging of the lense behind the cornea, causing it to not be able to hold its shape. If you develope myopia you were going to anyway and there currently the most common treatment is reding glasses.

My advice is go for it. It is the best money I have ever spent. Don't be afraid of it either. The procedure is completely painless. The cleansing of your eye after the procedure is far from painless but that only lasts 1-2 seconds and really isn't so bad. Feel free PM me if you have any questions.

They want you to go 1-2 years without any significant change in your vision. 1/4-1/2 diopter is fine over two years

not accurate.

reading glasses are required later in life because your eyes lose to ability to accomodate. Accomodation is like changing from a telephoto lens to a wide angle lens. this ability goes away with age and IS related to Lasik or Lasek. If you have either procedure done you are more likely to lose this ability of accomodation sooner and hence will require reading glasses sooner. for me it was a fait accompli that i would need reading glasses, it is for most people. the only question is WHEN i would need them and i was told that with lasik i would need them about 2 or 3 years SOONER than if i had NOT had lasik done.

test yourself, look at an object 5 or 6 feet away then shift focus to an object 6 inches away, do you notice that momentary lack of focus and then the slight feeling in the back of the eyes, that's the eye's changing "modes". the more noticeably this change is the closer you are to requiring reading glasses. at some point that ability will completely disappear, leaving you only with the ability to see things clearly that are farther than 8 inches or so.

I did make a mistake but have corrected it. The condition I was taking of is presbyopia and not myopia.

Info on Presbyopia.

2-3 years is negligable in the lifespan of a human.

Use search on "LASIK" of archived threads, there have been 2-3 long threads in the last 6 months.

2% failure rate is WAY too high for someone chopping and burning my eyes.

yes it is, but it doesn't SOUND that way when your only 20 yrs old. :)

or in my case i was 35 when i had lasik done so my choice was get reading glasses by age 40 or 43.

Here is a bit of info quoted from the page I linked in my last post.

"During middle age, usually beginning in the 40s, people experience blurred vision at near points, such as when reading, sewing, or working at the computer. There's no getting around it ? this happens to everyone at some point in their life, even if they never had a vision problem before."

It is a very interesting article and calmed any fears I had about losing near vision later in life due to the surgury.

Oh and I as 20 when I had my surgury (now 22). Had coke bottle glasses since I was 6 years old so this has really improved my quality of life and throughout my teen years I did a lot of research on the subject.
