Hi everyone, I searched for phoenix to see if anyone posted anything about this place, but couldn't find anything. I'm thinking about going, but it's so darn expensive, so I am looking for info here. Here are the reasons I am thinking about doing online schools:

1) The nearest school with any kinnd of networking stuff is just over an hour away from me.

2) I am married with a 1 year old... Free time is an issue.

3) I hate sitting through classes. All the classes where I was going are 1.5 to 2 hours long and I end up playing Starcraft or talking on AIM and not paying attention anyhow.

Like I said, the big minus is they are up to something like $450 a credit hour... I could just about to go any school in the state with that kind of tuition! With my transfer credits (if they take all of them) I figure I am probably 1/2 of the way done, and would need to go for about a year to finish up my BS in IT.

Comments? Suggestions on other online schools?

Discuss.

Thanks

Someone stated in a thread a few days ago that their mother was getting an upper degree (PhD I think) from Phoenix. Not sure who it was, though.

While Phoenix is an accredited university, I would recommend trying to take online courses from other colleges (local community, university, etc). UoP really isn't that very well respected.

But  for trying to better educate yourself! Good luck.

I looked around at online stuff in my area, and there isn't much at all... Instead of doing online, they all have "satelite" campuses in different cities, but don't offer full degree programs there. It's just the basic classes and some community college type certificates and stuff. Or if they do offer online classes, it's the CORE stuff like math, english, etc... That I have already taken :(

Thanks for the link BlueWeasel... I guess it would have helped me search if I had realized I was on ATOT and people can't spell anything here, much less the word Phoenix!

Our CEO has an MBA from there. Semmed to work out well for him.

Heh.... I guess it did work out fine for him! Did he get his Bachelors from there too? I am kind of worried about people seeing that online degree and not taking it as seriously as a regular B&M school, but at this point, I don't know that I could do a "real" school. Not enough time with the kid and everything :(

And it will work out well for some people. I'm just saying that in general, if you can get a degree from somewhere else that is more respected, do it. Especially for the rather daunting cost UoP charges.

From everything I've heard (including people on this forum that say they do hiring), the UoP degree isn't nearly as well respected.

If you are going to pay that much money for U of Phoenix, why not look for a public school with an online program in another state and just pay the out of state tuition? It would probably come out to be the same.

I dont know what state you are in, but here in maryland there are tons of UM campuses. If it is UoP or nothing, than UoP is the choice. But if there is some way to work out going to a B&M school it seems worth it.

Also, some people commented paying for another states out of state tuition. If you think $450/credit is a lot, you havent looked at too many out of state schools. I go to UofMD and am out of state. Cost per credit is $720.

Gotta love UoMd OOS tution. That's the reason why I'm going to a community college this year, and going back to MD next fall. Saving me about $26,000 while taking all those BS core courses.

Don't be discouraged from finishing your education from UoP, especially if it offers a program that suits your home needs. Online degrees have a certain stigma associated with them, there is no denying that. However, for most of us working stiffs, a degree is a degree is a degree etc. It doesnt really matter. Performance is what matters in the workforce, that and getting your foot in the door.

good luck!!

I did a year at community college back home too. I am almost done now, but yes, it is crazy. But considering the reputation of their aerospace program it was money well spent.

Check out their online programs

http://www.troy.edu/

you can be out of state to do them. 100% online

I imagine since they have a real campus with football team etc it's a little more trusted

maybe the last time you were in the mall and you filled out that little card that entered you in the contest to win that cute little 2006 Audi-wagon you were also entered into all the little crappy marketing spammers systems.

I dunno... :p

UoP is a for-profit company, they have to continue to attract its "customers" hence the spammage.

and SOMEWHERE along the line you signed up for it.. :D

I have a degree from an online university. There is nothing about my diploma or about my degree that says "online" or that it is worth less than a traditional degree.

Those that claim online degrees are worth less have never taken an online course. I have found that the classes are harder, in terms of the material, and more difficult to manage due to the online setting.

If you have any questions, PM me. I've been to Phoenix, but it wasn't where I finished my degree.

Hey everyone, thanks for the advice.... I'll have to look into the possiblilty of a "normal" school and paying out of state tuition to do online. Maybe something will come out of that.

Dirtboy, thanks for the advice, and YGPM
