Anyone here go to a pain clinic?

If you do....what do you go for and what kind of treatments do you get? I started a month or two ago. I go for my fibromyalgia and arthritis and stuff. So far I've had iontophoresis on my low back, my wrists (that didn't work out so well, it irritated them) and I had a travel iontophoresis patch put on my knee yesterday at physical therapy. I've had one round of cortisone shots in my wrists for carpal tunnel/ tendonitis. (I think it was mainly for the carpal tunnel, though.) Today I had about four or five (really about eight or ten if you count the first numbing shot) shots in my back on the really sensitive areas. I've had really good experiences with the pain clinic. They know I'm a complete wuss when it comes to needles so they always have someone to come in the room with me so I can squeeze their hands. Today someone from the front office came back and got me to talk about my wedding to get my mind off the injections. lol I think the next time I go in, I'm going to get trigger point injections.

Anyway....share your experiences if you have any. 🙂

I can't drink much alcohol any more. It hurts my stomach. I have to drag myself to the clinic. (Or in the last case...have my future brother-in-law drive me. lol)

Well, damnit...I guess I'm the only one. 🙁 (Well, maybe it's a good thing that other people don't need to go. lol)

i started but never went back [it wasn't cost effective and i won't take cortisone or steroid shots]

. . . acupuncture cured my pain-related problems from a herniated neck disk.

I hope everything works out for ya.

My aunt has fibromyalgia and gets acupuncture. My insurance doesn't cover it, but I'd like to try it some time. I got the cortisone injections in my wrists and I'm assuming it was cortisone that was in my back. I'm not sure. I didn't ask. lol The next thing I'll do is trigger-point injections and then a round of five shots for my knees. It's supposed be pig cartilage or something and it's supposed to really help. I was told that my knees would still grind, but they wouldn't hurt when they did grind.

I'm 29 years old. I have no idea what caused all my problems. You're date that you joined is newer, but I don't know how long you've been around. I've had lost of medical sh!t to deal with. It all started with a malignant brain tumor at age 18 and then progressed. (The tumor has been gone now for 11 years.) I've had chondromalacia (softening of the patella) since I was 15 years old. I'm not sure where the fibromyalgia came from. My aunt also has it, so maybe it's in the genes? Carpal tunnel and tendonitis? I don't konw. I have a ton of other stuff. That's why it's been hard to deal with. I see my primary doctor, a rheumatologis, and I go to the pain clinic to name a few. *Sigh*

thank-you

acupuncture/TCM cured my pain-related problems. cure. no more pain. ever. i've been neck-related pain-free for at least 4 years now 🙂

however, all acupuncturists are not equal. mine is from red china and he is a "master" - unfortunately i moved from Honolulu and i currently have an instructor at one of the major acupuncture clinics treating me [for other things] . . . his is "good" but not like the 'master'. 😉

IF your MD prescribes acupuncture, your insurance may cover it

No. I hope I don't have to.

BUT, considering I broke my neck and back in a car accident, I'm a future prospect for some type of pain management when I get older! YESSSSSSS! The kids future is bright in the sport of being an old man who complains... a lot.

As for right now though I'm fine. I mean I have pain everyday pretty much but nothing too bad.

As far as dealing with the pain, handstand push ups and regular push ups almost always take care of it, except for extended rain or dramatic weather changes.

You better watch out now! This kids got a bright and possibly extremely painful future!

I'll have to see if they do cover it, then. There is an acupuncturist at a place where I go and I think he's from China as well or was trained over there.

Damn. I don't envy you. One thing that's helped me with some of my back pain is Lidoderm (Lidocaine 5%) patches. I can wear up to three patches for 12 hours every day. For the past about five days, I've been wearing all three.

I feel ya on the weather issue. I'm like a freakin' human barometer. I'll say it's gonna rain and my fiance won't think so, but not long after....it'll start. That's one thing I don't like as much about VA as CA. The dampness isn't great for me. (Well, that and having actual seasons...that's hard on me too. lol)

Do you go, Paige? I'm assuming you do see a rheumatologist, though. What do you take for your RA?

i tried those patches . . . damn are they expensive

i found a really cheap alternative . . . benzocaine - 5-7%% . . . . i just used a bandage and those 'numbing creams' 😉

got to be clever when you have no medical insurance [like me]

remember other things like "ice" . . . a cold pack works wonders. Also try Tiger's Balm Ultra and White Flower Analgesic Balm . . . even the 'hot' patches using cayenne pepper {capsicum] can be helpful [if it doesn't 'burn' your skin]

after my accident, i had headaches that lasted continuously over a week . . . TCM is the only 'permanent' relief i found.

and don't forget EXERCISE. use it or lose it just not the exercise that aggravates it . . . try swimming.

Yeah, I've heard that the patches are expensive. Thankfully I have insurance right now that covers it. (Long story about how I may lose it. You can PM me...it's just not really something I want to post here.) I've tried some of the OTC patches, but they really didn't do anything for me. My body is weird, though. Heat helps on my hands and some other parts like my collar bones and arms when I'm flaring up, but heat hurts my back and knees. So...I use ice on my back and knees. Swimming is great for me. I had aquatherapy a while back and some days it was good and other days I would get a flare up. We live in a subdivision that has a pool, though, so I may try to get in there once in a while. You're right about exercise. It's just hard to find that (very) thin line between too much and not enough. After PT the other day, Tim had to help me to just get out of bed. I'm hoping that by having all this crap at a young age....maybe when I'm older I'll feel better. 😉

i have to go OFFline for an hour or 2 . . . please send me a PM . . .. i DO have pain relief suggestions 😉

I'm going offline for a few hours as well, but I did send you a PM. I'll be at Tim's brother's graduation party for a few hours. (Most likely I'll end up in the spare bedroom lying down. lol)

I don't go currently, and if I went I'd go for my messed up neck problems, not the RA. I take metholtrexate and plaquenil for the RA control, and prescription naprosyn for pain as needed.

I believe my best friend takes what you do for RA--aside from Naprosyn. (I don't know if she takes that or not.) She's lost a lot of her hair from all her medication. Have you lost any? I hope you feel better, girl.
