Czar well some people are i believe. That work at bestbuy, and stuff. Or has a freind or relative that works there. But heck the ATI 9700 pro is worth $340. I mean it wouldn't be bad to get it cheaper but still.

Czar you could always go work for compusa or bestbuy for like a few days or weeks. Maybe that would work. Not holding my breath but maybe.

Czar hmm do you live close to newegg maybe they give their workers a cetain percent off of products? Or maybe even some other store. I know compusa's expected ship date is Wednesday, August 28, 2002.

nope, czar doesn't live near newegg and i doubt they'd ship to his frigid, ice-bound country ;)

I work at Wally World but we do not carry the 9700 Pro and I don't think we ever will. :)

Though should hell freeze over, I will get 10% off.

If you MUST have the card now, you're gonna pay $350 ($340+s&h).

If you're PATIENT - when the NV30 launches - the price should be in your target range.

I'd say - from reading the comments in my "why upgrade" thread, the extra $100 is worth it for the 'bragging rights' for the power-users.

Actually I tend to agree, except that its difficult to distinguish between people who will get the Radeon 9700PRO for bragging and who will get it simply for performance. Personally I will get it purely to run at high res (1600x1200 with todays games) with 16x Anistropic Filtering on. I dont tend to be much bothered about FSAA, might try 2x though.

YOu didn't hear this from me but the wholesale price on these is about 300-320usd. So unless someone is willing to take a loss the least you will probably find these for anytime soon is about 325 plus shipping.

You'll have so much performance to burn, you should try the 6x mode at 1024x768 at least once.... I know I'd much, MUCH prefer 6x AA @ 1024 than plain 1600x1200.
1600x1200 does not get rid of all the jaggies and creepy-crawlies.

Best Buy's employee discount is 5% above cost.

Car Audio stuff would be up to 60% off.

Computer stuff 0-5% (rarely more than that but sometimes up to 10%).

Products with fat margins -- accessories (cables of all types) have a huge margin...

Unfortunately, computer stuff have razor thin margins.

Better than nothing though.

Nice thought though. :)

Depends on the company. CUSA sells products to their employees at cost, which could be 2% off or 90%(cables and such). 9700 is $325 cost there, which is close to 20%.
