Anyone here get their Timing Belts changed?

I've reached the 130K mile on my car and the serpentine belt/timing belt has never been replaced. Should the serpentine be replaced after 130K miles? If anyone has any recommendations on good and cheap places to do this please share. Thanks!

EDIT:OK so I learned the difference between timing and serpentine, thanks guys haha...

I checked a site and apparently its recommended to change the timing belt every 105K miles on my car, but "NOT REQUIRED" I also found out my engine (Chrysler 2.5L V6) is non-interference. Does that mean I don;t have to change the timing belt?

A: A serpentine belt is not the same thing as a timing belt.

B: At 130K, it's about time to change both belts.

😀

PS. What make/model, and where you live could help with suggestions on where to go.

Yes. Where? In my driveway. How much? ~$30. 😀

Honestly, I have no idea how much getting stuff done by a mechanic costs. Me and my dad do all our own junk (I'm in the process of rebuilding my cylinder heads right now). Not because we're better than mechanics or whatnot - we're too daggone cheap!

I've got me a 1997 Chrysler and I live in Naperville.

haha $30 sounds like a good deal to me. How long did it take you and was it difficult? My engine bay is crowded as all hell so I don't know about doing anything myself.

You don't have to worry about anything. You just need to show up in voodoochylde's driveway with ~$30!

The Serpentine belt is changed in about 5 minutes, a timing belt usually involves removing the front engine cover, and is generally a much more expensive operation ($500ish).

Depending on your engine type (interference/non-interference) this could be crucial to your engine.

If the motor is an interference type engine, and the timing belt breaks while driving, your pistons will likely kiss your valves, and you can kiss that motor good bye.

If the motor is non-interference based, your engine should remain ok, but you'll still be stranded somewhere waiting for AAA to pick you up.

To change the SERPENTINE belt? I had my timing belt/water pump/etc. changed on my A4 for less than $600. Time to find a new mechanic. 🙂

Non interference only means that if the Timing Belt breaks there wont be any valve damage. The pistons and valves can never occupy the same space.

Well at least I't wont rape the engine 😉 I'm a little happier now.

How old was the car/belt?? Why did the belt need to be changed at only 30K miles??

Nice to get such a big break on the labor, though... I mean, yeah, it's just 5-10 minutes but most mechanics (shops) would charge for the whole hour.

OP better re-check. I seem to remember all Chrysler 2.5L engines being interference.

Technically even in an interference engine the pistons and valves can never occupy the same space. If they could occupy the same space, there wouldn't be any damage. (There would be an interesting quantum anomaly though...) 😛

Says all Chrysler 2.4L I-4 engines are interference but not the 2.5L V6 ones

Your problem was going to the dealer. They always screw you.

I had problems with my windows not rolling up and down very fast and sticking a lot (in the winter they basically don't work) on my 96 accord. My mechanic said he did not have the parts i needed and couldn't order them so I would have to go to the dealer. They charged me $800 and my windows still stick and roll up and down slowly (and stick in the winter). I asked them about it and they said they don't warranty the work or the solution only the parts and the new parts are working properly. After that i refuse to use the dealer for anything ever again.

4 years old, the belt was wearing out here and there and that's the only thing the Mechanic said that needed to be changed for the 30k Maintenance

Volvo dealer wanted a cool 1k to change my timing belt. Luckily I was able to do it myself with some help from a friend who used to work on old volvo's.
