Anyone here get their eye exams at Sam's Club / Costco / Target?

Now that we dropped our eye insurance, I'm shopping around where to go for my yearly exam as my old place was quite expensive. I haven't worn contacts in years so I'll likely get a contact fitting as well, but might end up ordering any glasses from Zenni or the like.

So, what are you opinions on eye exams from those listed in the title?

My last eye exam was at Costco. No complaints except that he kept trying to sell additional services.

Costco uses independent optometrists in the stores...so YMMV.

Got it done at a costco. They're all independent optometrists. I didnt need a costco card to see them but needed to show the card to buy teh contacts. Pretty eventless experience, didnt waste a lot of time

My last eye exam was at Walmart. They also use independent optometrists... I think that he was better than my last optometrist, but YMMV.

i always go to costco for my eye exams. it's probably not the cheapest, but i trust costco employs a good optometrist and they never try to sell products since he only offers exams.

Been seeing the same one at Costco for the past 5yrs. Never upsells as he only prescribes and does not sell anything.

Great guy & good service for $80 or so.

I did it at costco and got my glasses made there. Exam was $59 and seemed good. The glasses are good, but I wasn't happy w/ the price. I ended up dropping maybe $230 including the eye exam, and I got middle-of-the-road frames and regular polycarb lenses -- not even the thin ones. Seemed like way too much money to me.

QFT, I was using the Costco optician and still do for a long time...however, costco themselves stopped taking my insurance for lenses. Sam's does though.

Eye exam at Wal Mart, get prescription from the doctor, and order glasses from Zenni.....

I go through several pairs a year and this has saved me major $$$.....

polycarbonate is a thinner lens. Unless your are talking about a step up from that.

Mine are the thick ones, and they called them polycarbonate. They said the thinner ones are some other something or other. I suppose I could wiki it but I'm lazy.

Last three have been at Costco, Target, and Sams. (All independent) All ran about $45-$50 for the exam. Don't see the issue with getting your eyes checked there.

WalMart (independents) for the past 8 years for myself.

No problems. In '04 it took a couple of trys (eyes were acting up) to get the lenses correct.
No extra costs.

I had what I thought was a killer half-off coupon for Target, but I didn't read the fine print. They only did one eye. :(

I went to sams club once, only because my normal optometrist was busy for the week, and I was heading back to school. The guy insisted that I was lying about my current prescription, despite me bringing a box of contacts in. Not only that, they probably gave me the most uncomfortable contacts I've ever worn. I came back home two weeks later and went back to my normal optometrist to get decent eyewear.

So I just called my old eye doctor, wow, what a ripoff;

Glasses Exam - $139
Contact Exam (Toric) - $120
EXAM TOTAL - $259

I called Target, Sams and Costco, all ranged from $110 to $130 including exams for both glasses and contacts (for astigmatism). Target was the most expensive, but its a new super target and the equipment looks pretty darn new so I might go there.

my cousin and his wife are both optometrists. He says that Costco is the best place to go b/c basically all eye exams are the same and they are the cheapest.

Yeah, guess what, I called Costco and they told me between $100 and $150 for the glasses including the exam. Guess what? I went there, paid the $59 for the exam, ordered the lenses with the frames and it came out to a total of $230 like I said above. And I didn't get any fancy options -- not fancy frames, not even the thin lenses. My glasses came out looking thick and chunky for that price. I'm still pretty PO'd about it.

I'm not buying glasses locally, so I'm not sure how your situation applies to me. None of my quotes were including glasses or contacts, only the exams.

I just keep photocopying my 2 year old prescription. I got one done last May, but I want to keep my glasses and contacts in sync.
