I'm heading to Tampa on Jan. 3rd from Boston and returning on the 7th. I've heard Tampa has good nightlife, so I think I'd like to stay there. Can anyone recommend a good hotel to stay at? My budget is $100-150, though I could go higher if its really worth it.

Was just in Tampa last week visiting family... Ill email my cousin and see if she knows anything decent.

One question though.. Is that your hotel budget per night, or for the trip??? Im thinking 4 nights will be more than $150 even at the shittiest of places...

That is per night. Since I'll be on vacation, take it easy, dont want to stay at a shitty place, a place that is at least 3 stars would be great.

I live in tampa. Not much for the night life, but the night life pretty much takes place in Ybor City, so I'd stay somewhere close to there.

Well I actually live about 45 mins south in Sarasota, but i've stayed in Tampa hotels twice in the 4-5 years we've lived in this coast.

My favorite hotel downtown is the Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina. Can be a bit pricey, but IMO its worth the added cost due to its prime location at the southern part of downtown and quick access to Ybor, Channelside, downtown, etc.... Its a beautiful hotel with extremely comfy beds and just a great location. Its about a 4-5 minute drive to Ybor, 1-2 minute drive to Channelside, and literally across the street from the St. Pete Times Forum and the rest of downtown.

The new Embassy Suites across the street from it is nice as well (and cheaper by a little as well), it opened just a few months ago. There is also a decent Westin Tampa Harbor Island hotel, but the reviews are mixed at tripadvisor (i've never stayed there myself).

I would stay away from most hotels over by the airport (except the Quorum or the Airport Marriott), all of the hotels in south tampa (dale mabry area, south of kennedy), and anything north of I-275 as many of them are older and with traffic, can be a bit of a distance to get anywhere (especially up by Busch Gardens). The only "bad" part of downtown to avoid is the eastern part of the downtown area, just below and above I-275 and just before you hit YBor. The 'projects' are an appropriate name :)

If you want to save some money (upwards of $50-$100 less a night), consider staying in a hotel in Brandon and taking the Crosstown Expressway into Ybor and Tampa. Its about a 10 minute drive east of Tampa, not much going around there other than a nice mall and tons of stores (Brandon Town Center and surrounding area) and tons of Tampa commuters, but its a quick shot right into Tampa and you can save a decent amount by staying around the area. The corner of 60 and I-75 has a slew of hotels that get excellent reviews (specifically the Homewood Suites)

Personally though, I would stay in the Marriott Waterside if you can swing it, I really just love that hotel...

BTW - Welcome to the area!

I live in Tampa. LAN party? lol jk

Yea, most of the nightlife is in Channelside and Ybor City, which are in the downtown Tampa area.

The Marriot Waterside will put you in the best place for fun. If you can afford a little more, it'll be worth it. I've stayed there and been to many activities there and I must say, the place is great.

Good luck! What are you planning to do here, anyways?

I live in St Pete and work in Tampa. If you'd like a nice hotel to stay at I work in the corporate office building of the Hyatt. It's literally a 3 minute drive from the airport, 10 minutes from International Mall (which has bars encompassing it), 15 minutes from channelside and 25 minutes from Ybor.

As for night life it depends on what you are looking for. I wouldn't head to Ybor unless you are looking for clubs, lots of real clubs. There are one or two nice clubs down there, but people say a lot of clubs there are dirty. I wouldn't call them dirty, they are just populated with college aged kids so it doesn't matter what they look like as long as they have cheap alcohol. The city of Ybor is old, been around for years, so think of it like that.

Channelside is nicer, more standard stuff. You'll find bars that you'll recognize there, you can wear nice clothes and enjoy some good looking places. There's a good sized movie theater and its kind of a like a bar mall. You cand do a big circle around the place untl you find a spot you enjoy. I have to plug Splittsville because my buddy's family is part owner. It's an upscale (for a bowling alley anyway) bowling alley that you can drink at, dance at, sit and talk at, its huge and good times.

Finally, my personal favorite, you can head to south tampa where you'll find inside\outside bars filled to the brim with people. There's music but no music to dance to or anything in those places, just a great place to bring like 10 of your co-workers and hang out. We are at places like Whiskey South and Macditton's most every Thursday and Friday for happy hour. Lots and lots of hot girls, but the successful type in their mid 20's. The hot college ones you'll find at Ybor mixed in with the not so hot ones. Some don't like it there because the guys can be jerks but again, it just depends on what you are looknig for.

That's all I've got.

If you stay at the Hyatt, you'll be able to enjoy one of the best restaurants in town, Oystercatchers. Great place, especially if you catch it for brunch! :)

Thanks, sounds like I have to check out Channelside and Ybor City. I have a friend and his wife I called up, havent heard from them. I'm going to meet up with this guy I used to work with, and this girl I met on a plane earlier this year traveling from CA to Japan. Other than that, take it easy, forget about work.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina, but says there's no rooms available for the 3rd through the 7th. Hmm, maybe I should try calling.

I definitely like the sound of South Tampa. I just checked the Hyatt, it says there's no dates available, wanna hook me up ;)

Looks like the hotels of choice are full. I just made a reservation at Courtyard Marriott Tampa downtown.
