I got a new job in Poughkeepsie and I am looking for a small apartment to live starting mid June. Anyone have any suggestions on where is the better part of town and where to start looking for apartments? I just need a small place; studio or 1 bedroom as cheap as possible. Hopefully something nice. Also, I must be able to have a place to park. Any ideas??

BTW- What is there to do around there??

Poughkeepsie is where I spent my first night in the U.S :) It's an IBM town - every other person must be an IBM employee. There's a Galleria there...and a huge Walmart ...and a road, I think....and Vassar, of course....didn't notice much else :p But, it's very pretty in the Fall and when it snows, I guess. I used to live in Huntington Apartments, I think (way back in '97 for all of 1.5 months). That and there's one right across the road called Richfield or Ridgefield. There's one more very close to the IBM facility right on Route 9 - I think a lot of people seem to prefer that over Huntington or Richfield (or Ridgefield). If you've read Stephen King's "IT", Poughkeepsie reminded me of Derry

I remember looking into this when a friend's boyfriend was considering moving there. Take a drive over there and pick up the local rag one day. Call up landlords and apartment complexes that you can afford and go look at them. Go a few minutes early to each appointment so you can look the neighborhood over. Don't be afraid to walk up to someone and ask them how the neighborhood is (unless the neighborhood looks really really bad...)
Only been there a few times so I won't be much help as to specific neighborhoods.

Yup thats a good idea. I found a Poughkeepsie newspaper online with apartment listings but they have no pictures. That makes it difficult to even get a sense of the neighborhood.

I used to do the Market Pro computer shows up there a few years ago. That place is like all suburb. Boring little town with nothing to do. They have a bridge of some sort that gets a fair amount of traffic, but if they didn't have that the town would have barely any traffic

Is it still an IBM town? I used to live there (back before 1980) when my father worked there, but I got the impression that both the Poughkeepsie and East Fishkill sites were scaled back to the point of nonexistence once IBM started consolidating in North Carolina and Texas.

I go to Marist so I know just about everything there is to know about Po-town...the police are called the Po-Po, the cabs are in the form of pimped out low-rider vans, and the bars will let you in if you show them a note from your Mom saying you're 21...it's fun :)

anyways I PM'ed ya re: apt.

IBM still exists in the area, but I don't believe IBM is a huge player here as much as it used to be. I'm not very familiar with Poughkeepsie, but I do know that there are nice areas and some pretty bad parts.

There are two Poughkeepsies... one that's the City of Poughkeepsie, the other is the Town of Poughkeepsie. I went to Marist... The City is a dump there's been multiple reports of harrasment and hold ups by townies to the college kids that decide it's safe to walk around at night (or walk to campus from the bars) The surrounding area isnt bad at all... Hyde Park is right next door...

actually, the part of route 9 has awesome views of the hudson. the FDR mansion is there. The vanderbilt estate is there. The Mills estate is there. all of these places are rich in history and are really beautiful.

While I agree that there's definitely "dumpy" areas, there are in fact some nice ones if u look hard enough :)

From what I see, Poughkeepsie and East Fishkill are still IBM towns, I think they are still the biggest employer there.

So I guess stay away from City of Poughkeepsie huh? All the cheap places I've seen have been there... ohh well guess you get what you pay for. The apartments I have seen are over $825 for a one bedroom, isn't that a lot for a upstate town?
