throw out all of your clothes. Go buy a whole new wardrobe from the thrift stores. Wear sandels. Print out some flyers and pass them out on the street.
 
You have to be rich to be a hippy these days, particularly in Berkeley. Cool hippy clothes are expensive, VWs are expensive too.
