New season of battlebots starts Tomorrow!
We used to do something similar with slot cars. Turn the motor magnets around in one, then run them head on into each other on the same track. We used to beef up the cars, put metal bodies on them, etc, to see if we could have the "toughest" car. That was 25 years ago...

Wish I had the time to make one; too busy making $$$$

I actually came up with a plan to make a fairly destructive BattleBot, I even took the time to draw out some schematics. I know for sure that I don't have the skill to make one, let alone the materials and tools. If I still went to the University of Minnesota I would be all up in the Robotics clubs and such, although I suppose I am still registered and could join if I wanted to... :)

I go to an engineering college (Purdue). I want to get with some mech E people (I'm actually CS) and build a battlebot. I think it'd be fun!

I'm Mech Engr... and I so so badly want to do this. I watch the show and see what kind of bot can win more often than not, and I think I can make some improvements on that basic design to make it even nastier. :D

Damn, I'm ready to rock already.

MechE's unite! hehe. Anyhow, I see so many bad designs and I'm sure I could build a contender if I had the time & money to put into the project.

I'm still trying to figure out what genius makes their movement systems so vulnerable to attack... both from below and surrounding. I laugh when their bot is disabled and they just have this sh1teating grin on their face.

Building a battle bot would be awesome. How much $$$ do you think it'd take? Cuz all i have is time.

Anyone remember a show just like battlebots years ago? I vaguely remember it, cuz i was so young, but those bots had real weapons like guns and flame throwers... those were the days...

Depending on the design, it'd probably be a couple thousand dollars at least.

The website claims that some of the contestants are making upwards of $40,000 in Prizes/sponsorships/products. :Q

I wasn't suggesting that we all get together and build one, althought that'd be really cool!. :)

I was just wondering if others had the same urge and had maybe actually built one.

Many of the bots are built poorly. Give me the $ and I could build one to end all of them.

I love that show. My favorites are the spin bots. You know some parts are going flying with those. :D

Did anyone catch the episode where they interviewed the family who built Mauler? They rolled bowling balls at that thing and it just destroyed them. The bowling balls exploded and crap went flying everywhere.
Mauler does have it's weak points though. If it gets flipped, it's dead. Or if it gets off balance, it's dead.
Ziggo, another smaller spin bot, is much better. It has a big metal rod sticking out the top so it can't get flipped.

Of course, I like Vlad the Impaler as well. It's pretty simple but tough and effective. That bot can be flipped, but it can right itself quickly. Offensively, it really packs a wallop. It pushes everyone around into the walls. I don't think I've seen anyone push that one around.

I think they should mount nail guns and welding torches on the things . . . :D

Hey, they're in an enclosed arena, who's it going to hurt?

seems to me like someone should just build a bot that has the ability to strafe. imagive strafing around the other bot in circles, while your mnumatic spike, saw, hammer, or whatever is pointing right at your enemy at all times. there would be no way for the other bot to get around to your undefended sides.

many years ago, my friends and i had a large collection of ROBOTIX. those old toys you can piece together to make machines that are powered by little motors, and controlled by wired remotes.
we would split all the parts evenly, and two teams would each build a fighting machine behind a dividing wall (so you cant see the other's creation), then we would fight them against eachother. it was great fun because it was never too hard to rip the other machine apart, because there was no armor, and the pieces just snapped together. and alot of the time the more creative designs did really well:

i think the best machine we ever built was a large bot with low center of gravity and two wheels to move around on, then it had two giant arms to hold the other bot still, while a third arm with pinchers wound pull out the other bots wires. :D
