Anyone here ever take Minocycline pills for acne?

If so how long were you on them, and did they ever stop working for you? I have been on them for over 2 and a half years. The doctor keeps telling me that they can normally get people off the pill pretty quickly and then just have them use the creams and stuff. But I am still on 2 100Mg pills per day, every time they try to take me off them i break out. And now I have been broke out pretty bad for over 2 or 3 months. Did I become immune to the pills?

Yikes! Taking anything for that long can't be good. I was on it for a few months and it never worked. Later they found out that the condition I had wasn't acne at all but was Rosacea. Took going to 3 different dermatologists before I found one that didn't have his head up his ass. You may want to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion if this is an ongoing thing, may not be acne at all. Good luck.

Yeah but my next doctors appointment isn't till July, and this is starting to make me upset. I looked really good for over 2 years now I have been broken out got over 2 months most of it in the same exact spot.

Thanks shinerburke, but like I said, the pills and creams did work for over 2 years with small break outs every once in a great while. But now it just seems like it stopped working

Call your doc and explain what's going on. Maybe they'll bump up the appointment or perhaps give you some advice. You could also try getting that second opinion elsewhere (before July).

I used creams for about 3 months to get rid of acne but they didn't help back acne and i would still get some nasty face zits. I took 100mg a day for a couple months then went down to 50mg a day. My doctor said usually she only keeps you on them for 6 months cause they don't do much after that. I still have the 50mg a day prescription even after 10 months now, but it doesn't really make any kind of difference anymore.

All i do now, is if i'm getting a zit on my face, is i put on a ton of benzoyl peroxide and that takes care of it fast. it doesn't hurt my skin either. for my back i found the best thing is to go get a tan and you'll find the zits go away

I actually started taking it just a few weeks ago. Over the past few months, I've been having these annoying "nodules" that lie beneath the skin, and they're rather painful. It was almost like an ingrown hair, but it never surfaced. My derm put me on minocycline for a month to see if it helps.

I think you need a new doctor. Being on medication for that damn long can't be good.

Also, my "nodules" appear in the same spot as well, usually right around the chin. I only get one or two at a time, but it's become quite annoying. Hopefully this clears it up for me...

Also, I was extremely dizzy and nauseous the first week or so of taking these pills. I'm still a bit dizzy, but it's subsided.

I have cystic acne, and my dermatolagist said that even though most people take minocycline for a matter of a few months, I could possibly have to take it the rest of my life. I took it for about a year, my skin cleared up beautifully. I stopped, and I broke out all over my entire body like I have never broken out before, so now I am back on them. They seem to be working for me, but I know from my experiences they can be a long term therapy.

And most people who can use creams for their skin don't need antibiotics to clear it up. The kind that requires antibitotics, like mine, cannot be treated with creams and lotions. Usually people with skin like ours have trouble their entire lives. Lucky us eh? 😛

Tell your doctor to get you off them ASAP! Something they don't tell you is that all *cycline medication causes teeth staining. I probably never would have found out either if it weren't for my mother-in-law being a dentist type person. They stain from the inside out, so it's not something that's correctable by regular methods. And believe me, when you get older, you definitely don't want to have teeth like I did. They always look kinda greyish brown. NASTY!!! And it's NOT cheap to fix.

Last time I went to the doctor he told me I had soem scaring, and I knew this cause some times the medication can really dry out part of my skin and cause my zits to break open which results in a little scaring which goes away in aweek or so. But he said because of that they may put me on acutane, and I'm not sure I want that.

I should I have been more clear. I have been to 2 doctors. I was going to one for over a year, but then they closed his building so I had to go to another one. Differant doctor, but same company(affiliated dermatology) so technically I have seen two doctors and neither has said anything about the length of time I have been on the pills

Okay let me tell you more about my story. I never used to be able to take pills, but I got lucky with minocycline, cause it was a little caplet with little yellow balls inside, and the doctor and pharmasist said it was okay for me to take the caplets apart and just swallow the little yellow balls. And that worked for quite a while. Well just recently all the pharmacies in Columbus switched minocylcine manufactures. They are still a caplet, but now they have a yellow powder inside which tastes bad and the doctor said with it being the powder it would be better for me to take them normally, so I forced myself to learn to take the pills. I can take them easily now, but right around the time of the switch in manufacturers is about the time i broke out, could that have anything to do with it? If so is there any way i can get the other pills?

God, please tell me you're joking. I don't know how much longer I can put up with this. 🙁

Been taking various medications since early '99, and I'm 19 now.

<< but right around the time of the switch in manufacturers is about the time i broke out, >>

Hmmmm....interesting. Maybe the new source they are using doesn't have as high a quality supply. Kinda like paying for some good hippie lettuce and getting oregano instead.

Why can't i send PM's?

Someone just PM'd me about the subject and I can't reply to thier PM nor can i just outright send them one.

Also what does everyone know about acutane, I know it's not very good for you, but when it drys out your skin, is it painful or bad looking?

I will give the doctor a call and try to get an earlier appointmnet as well as mention to him about the manufactur change.

Forget the PM problem, I guess the message box was just popping under my other open windows as opposed to over them

There is still hope, since you are still so young, it may just go away eventually on its own. That does happen for alot of people, so I wouldn't worry too much yet. But since I am 28, I know I am screwed. 😛

Takin minocyclin for 2 years isn't all that bad. The thing is that your body will build up antibodies against it and it will eventually become less effective. So then you should switch to another antibotic, like Tetracyclin. After a while, you can actually go back to minocyclin and it will be effective again. The problem with antibotics is that once you do go off them, your acne will come back almost immediately. Sounds like you need a different doctor. And, yes, try another medication.

Take Co-enzyme Q10 and Chromium Picolinate.

That should help decrease your acne.

Also could probably use some Accidopholus in your diet, yogurt and capsules should do the trick.

I don't really know about its effectivness, but i think had a part in that kid who flew a plane into a skyscraper in florida. It causes a lot of depression, sometimes leading to suicide.

I read about the whole skyscraper incident, the kid didn't even have acutane in his system. And supposedly it's less the 1% that get depressed over acutane. I am already depressed from having a face full of zits, if I was gonna kill myself i would have done it several years ago, so i am not worried about the depression. I just don't want to get on it and have it clear up my acne, but then cause me to look like a freak cause my skin is totally dried out and falling off, or I have bad rashes, or nose bleeds all the time. I know these are all side effects though, so i wish i could just fix the problem the way i was.

An associate of mine (I wouldn't call a friend, really) took accutane for a couple months. His acne was really really bad and the accutane did the trick. His lips dried out and started to peel. The skin to the top and bottom of his lips looked all red and chapped, which made him look like he had 1 inch thick lips.

Yea, it looked bad, but his face is clear now - with a few scars.

I haven't tried accutane yet. Since I'm not in school at the moment, it would be a good time for me to try. Who do I have to look good to? My coworkers? Pfffttt

Accutane is brutally effective...it's the only drug I ever took that had much of an effect. The dryness was a real b*tch to deal with but it was worth it. I agree that the depression thing has been blown out of proportion. As others have mentioned kids whose acne is serious enough to warrant treatment with accutane probably have among the lowest self-esteem of any demographic group...their suicide rate is already the highest around.
