Anyone here ever made the successful conversion from impatient can't stand freakin morons in the left lane type driver to calm cool collected I don't care what the morons do anymore type driver? What I am talking about here is those seemingly serene folks that calmly sit in the right lane secure in the notion that at most there is a negligible difference between the time they arrive at their destination in rush hour and the time the road warriors arrive at theirs? I truly envy those folks and would love to know what the trick is to achieving that outlook especially if you made the conversion from one type to the other.

i did. One day i just decided to slow down and live in the right lane. I usually only have to pass someone once a day, instead of every few seconds. :)

You could always move to Germany where these moroons are rightly punished.

Also, you could switch from death-metal to classical.

Get a CD player. Put in music you love. Sing real loud. Ignore the bastards. Or laugh at them.

Talk to your doctor and get a prescription for zoloft. It took the "edge" off for me.

I can now laugh at the idiots in the left lane following each other by two feet at 65 mph. Not to mention I'm not all pissed and stressed out when I arrive at work.

Heh I tried the classical thing many times and all it did was lend a sweeping grandeur to my lane changes. ;)

I used to go crazy driving like a maniac. One day I realised that I hated driving to work. So I ran a little experiment. I noted the time it took me to get to work driving like "normal" and then drove for 3 days (to get a good idea) at/under the upper speed limit. It was tense, trying to force myself to drive "nice".

I realised that the most I gain is about 5 minutes at the max (on average). Less time than it takes to dump a load. Nowadays I'm blissfully content in the middle/right lane. I'm also confident that if need be I can drive like a maniac in the left lane/shoulder from all those years of experience.

I'll pass some granny going 60KPH , but not the freak going 120KPH. Its takes patience, but its worth it. You'll enjoy the drive in as a calming time to collect your thoughts and plan your daily strategy.

If that doesn't work, whack off before leaving. That's better than any amount of Zoloft. Just make sure to wash your hands.

Max.

I like to drive fast. I very rarely drive fast because I'm late (I'm usually early). The whole "you don't save much time" thing to me is about the same as saying "Why run when jogging gets you there nearly as quickly", maybe you wanna run.

for me the trick is to go earlier, drive safely, & enjoy a calmer attitude, better gas mileage, and the knowledge that just one little slip up by the tailgating idiots will lead to massive fender-bending.

just ahead of the tailgating idiots is another group of tailgating idiots blocking traffic, so why bother?

I did. First thing that happened was I changed cars. This wasn't done in order to be more calm while driving, it's just something that had to happen. Then I started driving slower. I would catch myself if I was going to make a lane change that wasn't needed and I would make myself sit in the lane I was already in. Now, I'm still a fairly agressive, although I like to use the word efficient, driver, but I'm not some crazed person that HAS to get through as quickly as possible and anyone who gets in my way is an asshole kind of driver. I find myself less aggrivated when I do get to wherever I'm going if the ride over isn't such a pain in the ass. :)

Though I still get impatient sometimes when people do stupid things, I think having 2 babies in my car tends to slow you down a bit. Not to mention switching from a sports sedan to a lumbering SUV.

I did, but it took over 15 years of driving experience. I still drive fast, but I no longer drive stupid.

Man, I thought you were going to say you wanted to become Jewish, and wondered how the "conversion" was.

Anyway, but a POS Geo, that should slow you down.

I'm a road warrior. And I shave a good 20 minutes off my commute each way by efficiently switching lanes and staying out of the lanes that are filled with lobotomized idiots ;)

Sometimes I'll yell at people just for the hell of it, but generally stupid drivers have stopped bothering me..the only exception is when someone's in my way when I'm in a hurry.
Otherwise, I just crank up my music and sing along.

I think it depends on the car you drive too. I used to be very conservative when I drove my accord...now that I'm with a prelude I can be either really aggressive or really mellow. Also because I drive a manual, I'll just put it in neutral and cruise with this huge gap when its bumper to bumper traffic. Screw all the smacktards who don't like it...I'm not gonna shift constantly just cuz they can't stand a 40 foot gap!

I'm a pretty "Zen" driver for the most part. I will generally just pick a lane and stick with it unless I get behind someone who's really creeping. I learned long ago that incessant lane changing (a popular hobby here in Atlanta) doesn't really get you anywhere. As long as I'm doing at least 60-65 mph, I'll stay put since most trips around town are no more than 20-30 min. Driving like a spaz will net you maybe an extra minute or two....not worth it.

I made the swtich in the last year or two. I used to be balls to the wall, hammer down, 20+ MPH over the speed limit on the highways and interstate. It just got too stressful. Constantly on the lookout for cops, getting annoyed when somebody wouldn't move over to the right lane, stuck behind somebody doing *GASP* the speed limit, ect...

I guess I just grew up :) Now I leisurely drive to work. Put the cruise at 55 and just relax. No worries about speeding tickets. No worries about getting stuck behind slow drivers. I also get about 5MPG better as well slowing down to 55MPH vs. 70MPH like I used to do.

I much prefer to drive slower now.

Ever since I started autocrossing and the area cops have stepped up their speed ticketing, I no longer try to make mad dashes down the left lane. That and actually owning my car outright...

If I'm in a hurry and they're someone in the left lane with nobody ahead... I just blink the brights like it says in the road manual from proper distance to signal the requested pass. Most people get the point and speed up to move over. I'd rather not tailgate. If I'm not in a hurry, I just find a decently fast pack of traffic and find a car I can see over to sit behind. For a low riding sports coupe, I can't see crap if a SUV is in front of me.

Well I didn't make a 'conversion', I've always been a calm and patient driver. I think that its an entire life philosophy, you can't just be calm on the road and be a impatient asswipe when in line at the DMV, or vice versa. I think impatient asswipes are probably so pretty much everywhere all the time.

I can wait and wait and wait and wait and its like...oh well.

I probably became this way because my dad is a raging driver. He isn't a retaliatory road-raging type who drives aggressively, but he will scream and curse at someone over the most stupid things like not using a turn signal. "You stupid son-of-a-b-tch learn how to f-cking drive you dumb f-cking idiot." And that's before he gets out of the driveway. Shop workers can make a drunken sailor blush with their cursing.

So after being humiliated a thousand times when having to ride with him anywhere, not to mention that he does ALL of the things he unleashes a scathing torrent of cursing upon others for, as all impatient drivers are fundamentally hypocrites, I was determined that if the ONLY accomplishment I can claim in life before I die is to NOT be like that, I'll consider my life a complete success.
