Anyone here ever held both a J-1 and B-2 Visa?

If you want to travel right before your J-1 duration of stay expires, can you then re-enter on the B-2 for a few months? In other words, if you leave the US for about 5 days can you re-enter on the B-2 or will they pitch a fvcking hissy about it?
