He started off selling painted rocks when he was around 6 years old, then came up with his own food company selling flavored syrup which led to him becoming a Millionaire by the time he was 14!

From that article he certainly seems like a talented/motivated individual. There was something said in that article that bothered me though...

"I was 8 years old when I started my business club, called UNEEC," Gray said. "It stood for the Urban Neighborhood Economic Enterprise Club.

Gray got local businesspeople to donate transportation and meeting space so kids from the housing projects could learn about business."

Sounds like he got a bunch of donated resources to help teach kids about business..pretty cool.

but then...

With donations, Gray and the group founded businesses that sold cookies and gift cards. In a way, that was the first phase of his entrepreneurial lessons.

From that, it sounds like his idea of teaching kids about business is to put them to work selling things for him so he gets rich. It appears he simply convinced people to give him money under false pretenses so he could start his own business.

Am I reading this the wrong way? Am I being too harsh? My friends have suggested I have become very cynical lately so maybe that is true. Anyone else read it this way?

I hope people take a couple things from that story.

First, he put in an concerted effort. Sure, he got rejected plenty of times but he kept trying. Persistence pays off.

Second, he understood the importance of networking. "If you say no, then introduce me to five people who might say yes."

And third, he didn't make excuses why he couldn't succeed. It's obvious he started with NOTHING. And while I'll concede he probably had an edge because of his age (and its corresponding "cute" factor), it wasn't the key factor in succeeding.

Watched about him in 20/20 last night. Looks like a highly motivated person. Hopefully his sister will find a bone marrow match for her cancer.
