Anyone here ever have Cuban rum?

Saw something on the news about Cuban rum "making a comeback" or something like that, and I happened to go to a local liquor store (Japan) which, lo and behold, carries genuine Cuban rum -- has an authentication sticker from the Castro government and everything.

I'm not a big fan of rum, though I can't say I've had it in quite some time, but I'm intrigued -- is it worth the $15-20 for a bottle compared to run-of-the-mill Bacardi? Anyone ever try it? Any suggestions for drinks if I do get it? I'm normally a wine drinker.

Bacardi is nasty, why it has come to be considered top shelf here is beyond me. It just tastes like rubbing alcohol, no better than mccormick vodka which is 10 bucks for a handle and only good for hunch punch. I've had some cuban rums on a few occasions and it is definitely sweeter, more in line with something like Captain Morgans Gold, maybe even a bit more. Drink bacardi if you want to get sh!tty drink something good for taste.

Maybe that's why I'm not a fan of rum. Apparently Bacardi used to be THE rum before Castro took over -- perhaps that explains why they have a good reputation.

Are you saying it's $15-20 more than Bacardi, or $15-20?

Just $15-20. It was something like 1800-2200 yen (couple different bottles).
