i just spent the last couple of hours on an airplane wondering what would happen to your brain if you were on a plane and it was going down and you knew that you were about to die.

i think you'd go into shock due to the fact that your brain can't accept it's certain impending death. i've heard people who jump off buildings die of a heart attack before they reach the ground for the same kind of reason.

Your safe landing was a dream! You're actually still at 40,000 feet and the flight engineer has just discovered all hydraulics are out. WAKE UP!

i've nearly died many times, no big deal. as someone that's nearly fallen to my death several times, the sudden flood of adrenaline to the heart can be painful, but not a heart attack. a heart attack would take much longer to kill you than any normal fall.

I consider that one a "death experience" because technically, I guess I was dead.

I do have another one that I consider "Knowning" that I was going to die.

You ever heard the expression "I saw my life flash before my eyes"? That's what I'm talking about.......

I was 16-17 yrs. old, driving around in my '63 Corvair Monza on a wet night with my best friend. We were out doing some back road cruising, drinking a coupla beers, when I decided to go a little faster and liven things up a bit.

It was a two lane road, I was on the left side and upon entering the next turn the heavy rear-end swung us into a position where I was driving directly into a large dirt bank.

In a split second I "knew" I was going to die, accepted that fact, and told my buddie "I'll see ya later".

While all this was going on I saw a "film" of my entire life. It seemed like every single day since I'd been born was on one single frame of a 35mm film and it "played" before my eyes in a split second.

I saw stuff that I had forgotten, and probably would have never remembered, from some very young years.....3,4,5,6 yrs. old...who knows....right up until the day before the accident.

We hit the bank and I opened my eyes. My buddie looked OK and he was looking at me with these huge eyes.

We got out of the car to inspect the damage and discovered that because the bank had turned to mud and we weren't going that fast, the car was unmarked.

But when I hear the phrase "I saw my life flash before my eyes", I know what they're talking about.

That's what I consider a near death experience.

I almost died in a car crash. Everything was in slow motion and my life literally flashed before my eyes. Imagine your life in a 2 hours movie fast forwarding in 2 seconds.

wow, pretty much exactly as described here

How can my Life Flash Before my Eyes?

health wellness

The well known saying, life flash before my eyes, means different things to different people. For some, it is a simple saying regarding time and how quickly it rushes by. For others, it denotes an actual experience they have had, usually during a near death experience.

Although it can never be proven, people who have survived near death experiences claim the term life flash before my eyes is true. Car crash survivors claim this extraordinary phenomenon happens in the moments during the crash. Time slows down and the person?s entire life is replayed in flash images through their mind.

The images are seen as very quick pictures, and the experience can be recalled after the incident.
Thousands of people around the world have reportedly had the life flash before my eyes experience. The life flash before my eyes experience can happen to anyone at any age. Medical experts think it may be the brain?s reaction as a way of coping with trauma.

Once the accident has happened, or is avoided, the images stop and the slow motion feeling that is experienced returns to normal. Some experts say that during trauma, the brain is deprived of oxygen, which causes this strange occurrence to happen. The last thing we think of is our most precious memories of loved ones as a way to lessen the trauma.

Another strange occurrence that is attached to the life flash before my eyes phenomenon is that no sound can be heard. Everything is said to go completely silent. It is likened to sitting in a very dark cinema with only pictures flashing on the screen. Again, this is said to be the brain's coping mechanism, kicking in to counteract the trauma that is occurring.

The main trouble with the life flash before my eyes theory is that no one can prove it actually exists. It is placed in the same category as the out of body experience. It is a nice thought that the last things seen before death are pictures of our loved ones.

The life flash before my eyes theory is not out of the realm of possibility. Although the theory has to be taken on faith, the brain is a very complex organ. It is capable of many different activities, and there are still parts of the brain that are a mystery even to the medical profession.

Life flash before my eyes may just be a saying to people who have sat through boring business meetings. To others who have experienced this phenomenon, it is a very real experience - although it may be one you would wish to leave until later rather than sooner.

I've actually had two:

First:

Back in the dial up days I decided to get online. At the time i had a corner desk in my room. The window for my room was about a 2 feet from my shoulder. As I anxiously awaited my connection completion listening to the dial up noise I saw a VERY bright flash and heard a VERY loud "explosion". I thought the monitor blew out at me. The next thing i know I am standing at the top of that stairs scared shitless having no idea what happened. I don't remember moving from the desk. As my mom is faintly yelling in the back ground "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!" I looked back to see shattered light bulbs in the hall way I just ran through barefoot yet not a single cut on my feet. I look in the bathroom to see every light bulb blown out. I hesitantly look back in my room and discover the monitor not blown out. I go outside to see what the hell happened and noticed the screen to my window is melted and a black line down the front of the house. Lightening had hit the phone line. That was one hell of an insurance job for my parents. The components inside my PC were literally burned.

Second:

It was the day Katrina hit South Florida (where i lived at the time). The storm itself had passed but we still had a few "weak" bands of rain and wind coming through. My g/f at the time called me (she stayed south of me to weather the storm at my sisters house) to see how i was and was a bit shaken up b/c the house felt like a cave (had shutters up). I decided to drive over there to pick her up or spend time with her. I checked the news to make sure i had a good 20 mins before we got another rain band and headed out. About 10 mins from my destination on the highway my F150 hit standing water going 60 ish mph. Started to fish tail on the highway. I was able to keep it under control for a few swings back and forth but suddenly my truck turned a complete 180 and I was facing on coming traffic. As i braced myself for inpact I noticed grass flying over my wind sheild. Thankfully my truck kept momentum enough to end up in the median and out of harms way.

Both times I saw my life flash before my eyes.

I was trying to hold onto a car door handle when the car sped off, and crashed on the bike and saw the car's rear wheel zip right by my face. Very lucky there.

Pretty fascinating to read actually.

When I was little I was flying down this hill in my neighborhood (bike), was turning the corner, and my bike hit some loose gravel, and I wiped out. While it was nowhere a near death experience (just scrapes), when I crashed everything did go in slow motion and my vision was bobbing all around, just like when you see a 'first person' crash on TV when the person has a helmet cam.

About 2-1/2 years ago, I was asleep in my bed, at 2:30 on a Monday morning, when a natural gas explosion happened in and under the house I lived in. Literally blew every door and window off the house, lifted the roof off the house, lifted the house off the foundation, plus the drywall came off all the ceilings and most of the walls, and ended up on the floor with the insulation.
I woke up to my cat FREAKING OUT, car alarms going off, smoke detectors (and my alarm clock) going off, and some neighbor at my side window asking me if I was okay, and telling me I needed to get out, cuz he smelled gas. When the gas company guy showed up to ensure there wasn't any further gas leakage, he was shocked that I wasn't killed, as were the fire and police department reps.

Amazingly, I not only survived it, but came out without a scratch on me, even after walking barefoot across the lawn littered with broken glass.

No life flashing before my eyes, though......maybe cuz I was asleep when it happened??

I've always felt the difference in my two death experiences was because I knew I was going to die in the car wreck when my life flashed before my eyes.

In the other situation, I didn't know I was going to die, I just died.

For all I know the white light experience would come after your life flashing before your eyes.

What I do know is these experiences showed me what was important in life and it could be over in an instant.

Yup, strangest experience I've ever had.

Yea I was only 11 or 12 if i remember correctly. Walking across the ice that covered a local stream in early spring with a friend. Wasn't thinking that the runoff from the hills had increased the water level substantially and the ice had thinned due to the warmer weather. About halfway across it broke and I fell through, completely submerged (remember being pissed/sad i lost my hat) and surfaced about 3 feet from being pulled into the culvert under the road and continuing out to the ocean and managed to pull myself out.

The bee stings however were much worse. I wasn't even 10 yet and all I remember is walking around a firepit at my friends house (same kid there when i almost drowned) and stepping in a hole in the ground. About 5 seconds later all I could hear was buzzing and I remember putting my hands on my head and I could feel all the insects in my hair. Then I remember screaming and my friends mom running outta the house stripping us both of all our clothes and spraying us with a hose in the garage to keep them away.

After that I guess she drove me to my house (mom was a nurse, dad's a doctor) cause the next thing I remember is being in a tub filled with ice to stop the swelling with my mom on the phone with the hospital. That was fucking cold.

And when I say over 100 stings I'm serious. They couldn't count the total because of how many times I had been stung in the scalp etc.
