What was it like? Did you have swelling? Hurting? Curious because but gums are a little inflamed. Tooth doesn't really hurt gums doesn't hurt unless I am chewing something and it hits the spot. I don't know if I might have got some food caught in there or what. If it ain't better by Monday I'll likely see a dentist.

check for a piece of food stuck in your gum, like a popcorn husk

i had a piece of dental cement from a crown cause some inflamation like that, once the dentist scraped it out, it cleared right up

with an abscess the tooth would be sensitive to hot/cold.

More like it's sensitive to pressure. Hot/cold is mostly just the nerves are getting close to being exposed or are exposed. I just had a tooth yanked out a week ago, it had abscessed, so it was down to the bone and infected (or something like that). It hurt on its own, without touching it, but when I bit down it hurt a LOT. Had it yanked and no pain since.

I had one. I had to go into an "emergency" visit to the dentist over a weekend to get it checked out. It looked like I had a canker sore on my gum, but it turned out my tooth was absessing (sp?) out of my gum. . .which is really pretty gross.

The kicker was my whole jaw was hurting, and it turned out, that my absessed tooth started an infection in my jaw and ate away quite a bit of bone, hence, the constant aches I was feeling in my jaw. So, had to have oral surgery to remove the infection, put on antibiotics, the bone was able to heal itself.

This stemmed from a previous injury of me running into a flagpole, in which one of my teeth died without me knowing, and that was pretty much how the story started.

I also disagree with moshquerade. If the tooth has died, it wont necessarily ache. I never had a toothache, only pains in my jaw.

well I'll give it till Monday unless it gets worse. It's not bothering me at all yet. I think my sister had one once and she said her gums had swollen almost over top the tooth she was having problems with. It doesn't even feel like they are swollen unless I rub my tongue over the area.

Mine was because a filling had fallen out like 5 months ago, and due to me moving up to Canada I didn't have medical coverage until just recently. The gums hadn't swollen at all, my jaw was fine, the tooth just hurt like hell. I'm sure that symptoms can vary wildly, a few more days won't lose you any other teeth or anything like that. Just to be sure to get it checked soon.

My son had one... He had a toothache and it was sensitive to pressure... not so much to hot/cold though, as I recall.

The Dentist drilled though the tooth... once he was into the pocket... it just oooozed out.

That was one time I wished I had waited in the lobby instead of sitting in the room with him... lol

A medicated packing, a temp filling, a round of antibiotics, and then a permenant filling, and he's all better. :)

Go to the dentist now.

I had that one time. They said that if I had waited 12 more hours the infection would have spread to my jaw.

Unfortunately I can't afford the fees unless I know its a must have to thing. I want to give it at least the weekend to see if my gums return to normal. If its a abscessed tooth I am sure the irritation will remain or get worse. It doesn't bother me one bit thats why I am thinking I might have just got some food caught up in there.

Think of it like this. If it Hurts theres a good chance you got an infection already.
The only way to really be sure is to get that tooth x rayed. The dentist should guide you from there. you dont want an abcess to go on too long though. it can build up toxins in your jaw that will eventually enter your blood stream and give you a serious infection. im not a dentist mind you but this was explained to me By mine after i had one. be prepared for a root canal. it really sounds worse than it is. any competent dentist should be able to make it virtually painless
Good Luck

If you have an abscess you would know it. It is an infection that affects the nerve and causes pain. Hot and cold can cause pain and pushing on the affected tooth will feel better or worse.

Seems like everytime I get one the dentist wants to do a root canal.

Sounds like you have something irritating your gums.

Such an infection now can create a serious heart condition later in life. The bacteria from the infection enters the bloodstream and settles on the heart valves. It is currently impossible to remove this bacteria after it has settled on the heart valves. Medicine or anti-biotics do not help. This bacteria calcifies on the heart valves causing the valves to fail. This often results in baldness at the top of the head due to decreased blood flow through the body but not always. However, it will definitely cause a heart attack later since the calcified valves (think stone) will cease to function. If caught in time, the best thing that can happen is to have the valves replaced, resulting in the need to have all remaining teeth removed to reduce any chance of further infection, as well as taking blood thinning medication and a severe change in the foods able to be eaten.
