How was your experience. I might have to go to florida for winter vacation, but i do not wanna buy a ticket now b/c 1)prices are too high 2)if i don't go, refunding will be a bitch....How many seats are normally on stand by? I read that usually 60% are taken, leavinf 40% on stand by, but I think that is due to non vacation seasons.

You will not get a seat flying standby during the holidays. I can just about guarantee it.

I actually do not know how much they cost. I have never paid to fly standby. My Aunt works for Delta and I get free flights on standby whenever i want. ( only to and from certain places though )

Flying standby is ok, just expect to miss a flight or two. If there are problems, your at the end of the line. If you do have to catch the next flight, make sure the gate attendant knows you missed your last flight. Sometimes they may reserve your seat as a paid customer.

on thanksgiving of this year, i flew on a 10pm flight from ny to florida (arriving at 1am on thursday, thanksgiving day) and all standbys were denied. don't expect to get a late night flight and get on.

i have never done standby myself, but if i'm really desperate to go somewhere, i'd just pay for a ticket and avoid the stress (and wasting time) of trying to get on the flight. or if i didn't have the money, i'd find a cheaper alternative (like not going to florida)

I fly standby all the time through Delta. It's not that bad - as long as you know how airlines work, where their major hubs are so you can pick alternate routes, etc.

I've only had one time when it was difficult to get to where I was going.
